What is a rapid kit test?

A rapid test is a small cassette or strip. A few drops of blood, serum or a faecal extract are added and a line shows whether the germ or antibody is present. It is useful as a quick screen, but a vet may confirm a result with ELISA or PCR.

What is an ELISA test?

ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is done on a plate in the laboratory. It can find a germ's proteins (antigen) or the antibodies the body made against it, and it can be read as a level, which suits herd screening and vaccine-response checks.

Antigen or antibody?

An antigen test looks for the germ itself and fits current infection. An antibody test shows the body has met the germ, through infection or vaccination, and may be negative early in disease. Each test page says which one it is.

What is the difference between a rapid test and ELISA?

Can a rapid test be wrong?
