Bovine Tuberculosis Antibody (ELISA)
The bovine tuberculosis antibody ELISA looks for antibodies to the bacteria that cause TB in cows and buffaloes. It is used as an aid in screening, alongside the tuberculin skin test and PCR, not as a final answer on its own.

What this test checks
- Antibodies to Mycobacterium bovis, the main cause of TB in cows and buffaloes
- Whether an animal may have been infected, as one part of a TB screening plan
- Results your vet can combine with skin test and PCR findings for a herd decision
When your vet may advise it
- A cow or buffalo with slow weight loss, a long-lasting cough or falling milk
- Screening a herd, as your vet plans, alongside the tuberculin skin test
- Before adding new animals to a herd, if your vet advises
- After TB has been found in an animal from the same herd
About this test
Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a slow, long-lasting bacterial infection. Many infected cows and buffaloes look healthy for a long time, while others slowly lose weight, cough or give less milk. In early infection the body relies mostly on immune cells rather than antibodies, so this test can miss some infected animals. That is why it is used as an aid together with the tuberculin skin test, done on the animal by a vet, and with PCR, which looks for the bacteria's genetic material. A positive result needs follow-up rather than a quick decision. A registered veterinarian interprets the results for each animal and the herd.
How to prepare
Tell your vet about any recent tuberculin skin test and about animals in the herd that cough or lose weight. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Johne's Disease and Bovine Tuberculosis: Chronic Disease Tests
Johne's disease and bovine tuberculosis are slow illnesses of cattle and buffalo that cause weight loss over months or years. Lab tests can look for antibodies or for the germ itself, but one negative result never clears a herd.
