Canine Parvo ELISA Test
The Canine Parvo ELISA Test checks a dog's serum or plasma for signs of canine parvovirus, the virus behind severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea in puppies. Vets read it with the dog's signs and vaccine history.

What this test checks
- Signs of canine parvovirus (CPV) in blood serum or plasma
- A positive or negative ELISA result for parvovirus
- Strength of the colour reaction on the ELISA plate
Benefits of this test
- Gives your vet a laboratory result from a blood sample.
- Works from blood, so no stool sample is needed.
- Gives a clear positive or negative result that is easy for your vet to explain.
- May add useful information when a rapid kit result is unclear.
- Helps your vet decide on further tests or care for a sick puppy.
When your vet may advise it
- A puppy has repeated vomiting and bloody or very watery diarrhoea.
- A puppy is dull, will not eat and has fever.
- A dog has been in contact with a dog that had parvo.
- A rapid kit result was unclear and your vet wants a laboratory test.
- A puppy with an unknown or incomplete vaccine history becomes unwell.
- Several puppies in a litter or kennel fall ill with gut signs.
About this test
Canine parvovirus is a serious virus that attacks the lining of a dog's gut. Puppies and young dogs that are not fully vaccinated are most at risk. It can cause vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, fever, weakness and loss of appetite.
ELISA stands for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The lab uses a small plate coated with special proteins that match parvovirus. Serum or plasma, which is the clear liquid part of blood, is added to the plate. If a matching marker is present, it sticks. After washing, a colour reagent is added and a reader measures the colour. The result is usually reported as positive or negative.
This entry is the laboratory ELISA done on blood. It is different from the stool rapid kit and from PCR, which are listed as separate tests. Your vet uses the result to help judge whether parvovirus is likely and what to do next.
How to prepare
No special preparation is needed, and a sick puppy should see a vet without delay. Blood is drawn by a vet or trained staff, and the lab needs about 3 mL of serum or plasma, kept cool until it reaches the lab. Reporting time is confirmed when you book.
Reading the result
A positive result may indicate parvovirus infection, but recent vaccination or past exposure can also affect ELISA results. A registered veterinarian reads it with the dog's age, signs and vaccine dates, and then decides on treatment or further tests.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
