What this test checks
- Signs of canine distemper virus (CDV) in blood serum or plasma
- Whether the distemper ELISA reading is positive or negative
- Colour reading of the sample on the ELISA plate
- Distemper only; parvovirus is tested separately
Benefits of this test
- Backs up the vet's examination with a laboratory result when signs could fit distemper.
- Needs only a blood sample, with no swab from the eyes or nose.
- Gives a simple positive or negative result.
- Helps your vet decide whether more tests, such as PCR, are needed.
- Helps your vet advise you on protecting other dogs at home.
When your vet may advise it
- A young dog has fever with a cough and runny eyes and nose.
- A sick dog has vomiting or diarrhoea together with eye and nose discharge.
- A dog has twitching, fits or weak legs after a recent fever or cough.
- A sick dog has a thick, hard nose or thick, hard footpads.
- A dog that missed part of its vaccine course falls sick.
- Your dog met another dog that showed signs of distemper.
About this test
Canine distemper is a serious virus disease of dogs, seen mostly in puppies and young dogs that have not completed their vaccines. It can cause fever, cough, runny eyes and nose, vomiting and diarrhoea. In some dogs it later affects the nerves and brain and causes twitching, fits or weakness.
This is a laboratory ELISA done on serum or plasma, the pale, clear liquid that is separated from blood. The sample is added to a small plate coated with proteins that match the distemper virus. The plate is washed and a colour reagent is added. A reader then measures the colour, and the report is usually a simple positive or negative.
The rapid kit and PCR are other forms of testing and have their own entries. Distemper can look like other illnesses, so the result is read together with the dog's signs and vaccination history.
How to prepare
Follow your vet's advice about food, as fasting is not usually needed. Your vet or lab staff draws the blood, and the serum or plasma (about 3 mL) should be kept cool and sent to the lab without delay. Reporting time is confirmed when you book.
Reading the result
A positive result may point towards distemper, but it is not read alone, because vaccination, earlier exposure and the stage of illness can all change the result. A registered veterinarian uses the dog's signs and history to decide on further tests or treatment.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Canine Distemper: RT-PCR Versus the Rapid Test
For suspected canine distemper, the rapid test gives a quick first look, RT-PCR looks for the virus's genetic material and can find small amounts, and the ELISA adds information from the immune side. Vets often read them together.
