Biopsy and cytology tests for dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes in Bhopal

When an animal has a lump, a long-lasting sore or an unexplained fluid, cytology and biopsy show what the cells look like. A pathologist examines the sample under the microscope and describes the findings for your veterinarian.

About these tests

Cytology (FNAC)

Cytology looks at individual cells, for example taken from a lump with a fine needle, from fluid, or from an ear or skin smear. It is quick and usually needs no anaesthesia, but it may not give a full answer.

Biopsy and histopathology

A biopsy removes a piece of tissue, or a whole lump, and the pathologist studies a thin slice under the microscope. It shows the structure of the tissue and is more detailed than cytology.

How is the sample sent?

A veterinarian takes the sample. Tissue goes into formalin, and smears are dried and kept flat. The lab tells you how to pack it when you book.

Questions about biopsy and cytology tests

What is the difference between FNAC and biopsy?
FNAC collects cells with a needle and is quick. A biopsy collects a piece of tissue and shows more detail. Your veterinarian chooses based on the lump and the animal.
Does a result of 'tumour' always mean cancer?
No. Lumps can be harmless or serious. The pathologist describes the cells, and your veterinarian explains what the result means and what to do next.
How should a biopsy sample be stored?
Tissue is usually placed in formalin by your veterinarian. Do not let it dry out. The lab tells you how to pack and send it.
Can samples from other districts be sent?
Yes, through your veterinarian by courier or bus parcel. Call the lab first so they can tell you how to pack it.
