What this test checks

  • Antibodies to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV)
  • FeLV antigen, a protein of feline leukaemia virus, in the blood
  • Two separate results, one for each virus, from one serum sample

Benefits of this test

  • Checks two important cat viruses with one blood sample.
  • Can help explain repeated infections, weight loss, anaemia or mouth problems.
  • Helps protect other cats at home by finding an infected cat early.
  • Useful as a first health check for rescued or newly adopted cats and kittens.
  • Gives a quick screening result that helps your vet choose the next step.

When your vet may advise it

  • A new kitten or cat is about to join a home with other cats.
  • A cat has had fever, weight loss or poor appetite for a long time.
  • A cat has pale gums, swollen lymph glands or lumps.
  • A cat has mouth sores or gum disease that keeps coming back.
  • An outdoor cat, or a male cat that has not been neutered, has been in fights or has bite wounds.
  • A cat gets infections again and again, or its wounds heal slowly.

About this test

FIV and FeLV are two viruses that weaken a cat's defence against disease. FIV spreads mainly through deep bite wounds from fights. FeLV spreads through saliva and close contact, such as shared bowls and grooming, and from a mother cat to her kittens. Neither virus infects people.

This combo kit tests one serum sample, the clear liquid part of the blood, for both viruses. It looks for antibodies to FIV and for FeLV antigen, a protein from the virus. The sample is placed on a test device, and coloured spots show the result for each virus.

This entry is the rapid combo kit form of the test. It is commonly used for sick cats, for cats with a risk such as fights or bite wounds, and as a first check for new cats and kittens.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed for this kit test, but follow your vet's advice if the same blood sample is used for other tests. The lab or your vet collects the blood and the serum is separated for the kit, so tell the vet your cat's age and whether it goes outdoors. The lab collects samples free anywhere in Bhopal, and from other places your vet can send the sample by courier or bus parcel.

Reading the result

Each virus is read separately: a positive result may indicate infection and may need a repeat or confirmation test, especially in a young kitten. A registered veterinarian reads the result with the cat's signs and history and advises how to protect other cats at home.

Questions about FIV / FeLV (Combo Kit)

What is the difference between FIV and FeLV?
FIV spreads mainly by deep bite wounds from fights. FeLV spreads through saliva and close contact, and from mother to kittens. Both weaken the immune system. The combo kit checks for both in one test.
Can people catch FIV or FeLV from a cat?
No. FIV and FeLV infect cats and do not spread to people. A positive cat still needs your vet's guidance on how to keep other cats in the home safe.
My kitten tested positive. Is that the final answer?
Not always. A kitten under about six months can test positive for FIV because of antibodies passed on by its mother. A positive FeLV result may also need a repeat or confirmation test. Your vet will advise on retesting.
Can the test miss a recent infection?
Yes. It takes time after infection for the test to turn positive, so a cat exposed in the last few weeks can test negative. Your vet may repeat the test after some weeks if the cat had a recent bite or contact with an infected cat.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

FIV and FeLV Testing for Kittens and Newly Adopted Cats

A kitten or a newly adopted cat can be tested for FIV and FeLV with a small blood sample and a rapid kit. A very young kitten or a recent infection can mislead a kit, so a repeat test or RT-PCR may follow.
