What this test checks
- Antibodies to Brucella (mainly Brucella canis) in blood or serum
- Whether the dog's body has met the bacteria
- A positive or negative kit result for Brucella antibodies
- A screening result that may need confirmation by another test
Benefits of this test
- Gives a quick screening answer from a small blood sample.
- Can help find infection in dogs that look completely healthy.
- Can help breeders check dogs before mating.
- Helps your vet look into the cause of abortion, weak pups or infertility.
- Helps your vet decide whether confirmation tests are needed to protect other dogs in the kennel.
When your vet may advise it
- A female dog lost her pups late in pregnancy or gave birth to dead or weak pups.
- A breeding male or female dog is being checked before mating.
- A male dog has a swollen or painful testicle, or has not been able to father pups.
- A female dog repeatedly fails to become pregnant after mating.
- A dog has long-lasting back pain, swollen glands or repeated eye inflammation, and your vet suspects brucellosis.
- A new dog is joining a breeding kennel, or another dog in the kennel has tested positive.
About this test
Canine brucellosis is an infection caused mainly by a bacterium called Brucella canis. It can pass through birth fluids, aborted pups, urine and mating. Many infected dogs look healthy. The first sign is often a lost litter, weak pups, or a male dog that cannot father pups.
This rapid kit looks for antibodies, which are proteins the body makes when it meets a germ. A small amount of blood or serum is placed on a test device, and coloured lines show the result. It is a quick first check, also called a screening test.
This page covers the rapid kit form of the test. A screening test can sometimes be positive without infection, or negative very soon after infection, so vets often confirm a positive with another test. Breeders and vets commonly use it for breeding dogs and for dogs with unexplained abortion or infertility.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed, but follow your vet's advice and tell the vet about any recent mating, abortion or contact with other breeding dogs. In Bhopal, sample collection is free from anywhere in the city; outside Bhopal, your vet or clinic can send the blood by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A positive result may indicate exposure to Brucella or infection, and because it is a screening test your vet will usually confirm it with another test. A negative result does not fully rule out infection in a dog exposed recently, so a registered veterinarian reads it with the dog's history and signs.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
