What this test checks

  • Antibodies against Coxiella burnetii in serum from one animal
  • Antibodies in milk, which can help show whether a herd has been exposed

When your vet may advise it

  • Abortions, stillbirths or weak calves in a herd
  • Repeat breeding or retained afterbirth in several animals
  • Checking a herd's exposure before buying animals or after a Q fever case

About this test

Q fever is caused by Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium that often causes no signs in cows and buffaloes. Some animals abort, give birth to weak or dead calves, keep the afterbirth or fail to conceive. The germ leaves the body in birth fluids, the afterbirth, milk and dung. This ELISA looks for antibodies, the body's defence proteins, in serum or milk, which shows that the animal or herd has met the germ. An animal with a negative result can still shed it, so your vet may add Q fever PCR on milk or a birth sample. A registered veterinarian interprets the result with the herd's breeding and abortion history.

How to prepare

Wear gloves when collecting milk or handling birth material. Label each sample with the animal's name, or mark it as herd milk. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Coxiella burnetii (Q Fever) Antibody ELISA

Can people catch Q fever from cows and buffaloes?
Yes, Q fever can pass to people, mainly by breathing in dust from birth fluids, the afterbirth or dung. Wear gloves when handling births, aborted calves or samples, wash your hands well and see a doctor if you develop fever or feel unwell.
Can Q fever be tested from milk?
Yes. Antibodies can be measured in milk from a single animal or from pooled herd milk. A milk result is a herd-health check for the owner's information and does not replace official food-safety testing. Your vet decides whether serum, milk or a PCR sample suits your herd.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
