Giardia Faecal Antigen (Rapid Test)
The Giardia rapid test is a kit test that detects Giardia antigen, a protein from the parasite, in fresh faeces from dogs and cats. It can help your vet look into diarrhoea, but a negative result does not always rule Giardia out.

About this test
Giardia is a tiny single-celled parasite that lives in the gut of dogs and cats. Animals pick it up by swallowing cysts, a hardy stage of the parasite, from dirty water, soil or faeces. It is common where many animals live close together. Giardia can cause diarrhoea that comes and goes, often soft, smelly or with mucus, and some pets lose weight. Many infected pets show no signs at all.
This rapid kit test looks for Giardia antigen in a fresh faeces sample. An antigen is a protein that comes from the parasite, so the test can pick up Giardia even when no parasites are seen under the microscope. The kit gives a positive or negative result. Giardia is shed on and off, so a negative result does not always rule it out. Your vet may repeat the test, ask for samples from more than one day or add a Giardia PCR or a Faecal Direct Smear (Protozoa). PCR looks for the parasite's genetic material.
A positive result shows that Giardia antigen is present. Diarrhoea can have many causes, and a pet can carry Giardia without it being the cause of the signs, so a registered veterinarian reads the result together with your pet's signs, history and other tests. Your vet decides what a positive result means for your pet and whether other pets at home should be checked. Giardia can sometimes pass between animals and people, so wear gloves when collecting faeces, wash your hands well and speak to a doctor if anyone in the family has diarrhoea or stomach upset.
How to prepare
Collect a fresh faeces sample soon after your pet passes it, in a clean container with a lid, and keep it cool; your vet may ask for samples from more than one day. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the result together with your pet's signs, history and other tests. A positive result shows Giardia antigen, but Giardia may not be the only cause of diarrhoea. A negative result does not always rule Giardia out because shedding comes and goes, so your vet may repeat the test or add a Giardia PCR or a faecal smear.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
