Trypanosoma evansi (Surra) Antibody ELISA

Trypanosoma evansi (Surra) Antibody ELISA

The surra antibody ELISA looks for antibodies to Trypanosoma evansi, a blood parasite, in cows, buffaloes and dogs. A positive result shows exposure and can stay positive after treatment, so it does not prove current illness.

What this test checks

  • Antibodies against Trypanosoma evansi in serum
  • Whether a cow, buffalo or dog has been exposed to surra, now or in the past

When your vet may advise it

  • Fever that comes and goes with weight loss and pale gums in a cow or buffalo
  • Herd checks where surra has been found in nearby animals
  • A dog with fever, swelling of the face or legs, or cloudy eyes
  • When blood smears are negative but your vet still suspects surra

About this test

Surra is a disease caused by Trypanosoma evansi, a parasite that lives in the blood. Biting flies carry it from animal to animal, and dogs may also catch it by eating raw meat from an infected animal. Cows and buffaloes may show fever that comes and goes, weight loss, weakness, swelling of the legs and a drop in milk. Dogs may have fever, weakness, swelling of the face or legs and cloudy eyes. The parasite is not always seen in a blood smear, so this antibody test helps in long-standing cases and herd checks. A registered veterinarian interprets the result with the animal's signs, other tests and treatment history.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. Tell the vet about any past surra treatment, because antibodies can remain afterwards. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Trypanosoma evansi (Surra) Antibody ELISA

Can the surra antibody test show if treatment has worked?
No. Antibodies can stay in the blood for a long time after treatment, so a positive result may only mean past infection. To look for live parasites, your vet may use a wet blood film, a buffy coat smear or Trypanosoma evansi PCR instead.
Can dogs get surra?
Yes. Dogs can get surra, often after eating raw meat from an infected animal or through biting flies. It can make a dog seriously ill, so a dog with fever, swelling or cloudy eyes needs a vet promptly. Your vet decides which tests, such as a smear, PCR or this antibody test, suit the case.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
