What this test checks
- Antibodies to Anaplasma species in a dog's blood or serum
- Whether the dog has been exposed to this tick-borne germ at some time
- A clue that, with a blood count, helps your vet judge possible anaplasmosis
When your vet may advise it
- A dog with fever, tiredness or poor appetite after ticks were seen on it
- Lameness or stiff, painful joints in a dog living in a tick-prone area
- Low platelets on a blood count, or bruising or nosebleeds without a clear cause
- A check of a dog from a tick-prone area, if your vet advises it
About this test
Anaplasma is a germ that ticks pass to dogs when they feed. It infects blood cells and can cause fever, tiredness, poor appetite, stiff or painful joints, and low platelets, the cells that help blood clot, which may lead to bruising or nosebleeds. This kit looks for antibodies, the proteins the immune system makes after meeting the germ. Antibodies take time to appear, so a dog in the early stage of illness can test negative. Dogs in tick-prone areas can also stay positive long after an old infection. A registered veterinarian reads the result together with a blood count and the dog's signs, and may add a PCR test.
How to prepare
Tell your vet about tick problems, recent illness and any medicines the dog has had. Fasting is not usually needed. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
