Culture and sensitivity tests for dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes in Bhopal

A culture test grows the germs from a sample, and the sensitivity test shows which antibiotics may work against them. They help a veterinarian choose treatment for stubborn or repeated infections of the urine, skin, ears, wounds, uterus and udder.

About these tests

What does culture and sensitivity show?

The sample is placed on special plates in the laboratory. If germs grow, the lab names them and tests them against a set of antibiotics. The report lists which antibiotics the germ may respond to. Your veterinarian chooses the treatment.

Why take the sample before antibiotics?

Antibiotics given earlier can stop germs from growing in the laboratory and give a falsely clear result. Where possible, take the sample before the first dose, and tell the lab if antibiotics were already given.

How long does it take?

Germs need time to grow, so culture takes longer than a blood count. The lab confirms the reporting time when you book.

Questions about culture and sensitivity tests

What is the difference between culture and sensitivity?
Culture finds out which germs are growing in the sample. Sensitivity then shows which antibiotics may stop those germs in the laboratory.
Should I give antibiotics before collecting the sample?
Ask your veterinarian. Where possible the sample is taken first, because earlier antibiotics can make the culture look clear when infection is still present.
How should a swab or urine sample be collected?
Use a sterile swab or container and avoid touching the tip or the inside. Urine is best collected midstream or by your vet. The lab tells you more when you book.
Which infections can be cultured?
Common samples are urine, skin and pus, ear, nose, eye and wound swabs, stool, uterine discharge and milk. Each test page lists the sample type.
