Puppy With Loose Motions: Which Lab Tests Help the Vet
A puppy with loose motions should see a vet quickly. The vet may use a stool test, a parvo rapid test, RT-PCR and a blood count, each answering a different question about the cause.

RT-PCR (real-time PCR) tests look for the genetic material of germs such as viruses, bacteria and blood parasites. They can find an infection early and name the organism. Below are the RT-PCR tests listed for dogs, cats, cows, buffaloes and horses, from single-germ tests to multi-germ panels.
RT-PCR here means real-time PCR. PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction: it copies a tiny piece of a germ's genetic material many times until the machine can detect it, and 'real-time' means the machine watches the copying as it happens. Because it looks for the germ itself, RT-PCR can show infection before the body has made antibodies.
Many viruses, such as canine distemper virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, equine influenza virus and rabies virus, keep their genetic material as RNA. For these, the test first turns RNA into DNA (reverse transcription) and then copies it. The lab chooses the right version for each test and confirms the method when you book.
It depends on the germ: EDTA blood for blood parasites, swabs for respiratory germs, faeces for gut germs, milk for mastitis germs and tissue or fluid for some diseases. Taking the sample correctly, and before antibiotics where possible, makes the result more reliable.
A negative RT-PCR does not always rule infection out, for example if the sample was taken late or contained little of the germ. A positive result can also reflect a carrier or past exposure. A veterinarian reads the result together with the signs. RT-PCR does not show which antibiotics will work; culture and sensitivity does that.
RT-PCR (real-time PCR) tests detect the genetic material of infectious agents, including tick-fever parasites.

Kitten diarrhoea can come from worms, parasites, viruses or stress. Stool tests, a Giardia kit, a panleukopenia kit and an RT-PCR panel help the vet find out which, and a sick kitten needs prompt care.

A kitten or a newly adopted cat can be tested for FIV and FeLV with a small blood sample and a rapid kit. A very young kitten or a recent infection can mislead a kit, so a repeat test or RT-PCR may follow.
