What this test checks

  • Signs of canine distemper virus infection in serum
  • A positive or negative kit result for distemper only
  • A quick screening result, not a measure of how sick the dog is
  • It is not a test for parvo or other puppy infections

Benefits of this test

  • Gives a quick first answer when distemper is suspected.
  • Needs only a small serum sample from one blood draw.
  • Helps your vet decide which tests to do next and how to keep the dog away from other dogs.
  • Your vet can add PCR if the kit result does not match the signs.
  • Useful for kennels and shelters where several dogs show similar signs.

Often discussed at these ages:Puppy

When your vet may advise it

  • A puppy or young dog has fever, runny eyes and nose and a cough, with or without loose stools.
  • A dog has twitching of the face or legs, fits or an unsteady walk.
  • The nose or paw pads have become thick and hard.
  • A dog that is unvaccinated or only partly vaccinated has been near a sick dog.
  • A kennel, shelter or breeder needs a quick check because several dogs are ill.

About this test

Distemper is a serious virus infection of dogs. Fever, runny eyes and nose, cough and diarrhoea are common early signs. Some dogs later get twitching, fits or a wobbly walk.

This rapid kit uses serum, the clear liquid part of the blood. A small amount is placed on a test device, and coloured lines show the result in a short time. It is a screening test, which means a quick first check meant to give an early answer.

Here the test is the rapid kit version. Canine Distemper PCR and the ELISA tests are listed separately. Because distemper looks like other illnesses, your vet uses the kit result together with the dog's signs, vaccination history and, when needed, other tests.

How to prepare

Fasting is not needed, and your vet will tell you if anything else is required. The lab or your vet collects the blood, and the serum is separated for the kit. Free sample collection is available anywhere in Bhopal; outside Bhopal the sample can reach the lab through your vet or clinic, and the lab coordinates by phone or WhatsApp.

Reading the result

A positive kit may indicate distemper virus infection, and a negative kit does not fully rule it out, especially very early or late in the illness. A registered veterinarian reads the result with the dog's signs and vaccination history and may advise PCR or other tests.

Questions about Canine Distemper Virus (Rapid Test)

Is the distemper rapid test enough to confirm distemper?
Not always. It is a screening test. A positive result may indicate infection, but your vet also looks at the dog's signs and vaccination history and may ask for PCR to confirm. A negative result does not fully rule distemper out.
How is the rapid test different from the Canine Distemper PCR?
The rapid test is a quick kit run on serum. Canine Distemper PCR is a separate test on blood and urine that looks for the virus's genetic material and is usually better at finding small amounts of virus. Your vet may ask for both.
Which dogs are most at risk of distemper?
Puppies and dogs that are unvaccinated or only partly vaccinated are most at risk, especially in crowded places such as shelters, kennels and markets. Ask your vet about the vaccination schedule for your dog.
How long does the rapid distemper test take?
The kit itself works in minutes. The report is normally shared the same day or within 24 hours, and the lab confirms the timing when you book. Do not delay seeing a vet while you wait for the report.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Canine Distemper: RT-PCR Versus the Rapid Test

For suspected canine distemper, the rapid test gives a quick first look, RT-PCR looks for the virus's genetic material and can find small amounts, and the ELISA adds information from the immune side. Vets often read them together.
