Canine Parvo Virus Ag (Rapid Test)

Canine Parvo Virus Ag (Rapid Test)

Canine Parvo Virus Ag (Rapid Test) is a quick stool kit test that looks for parvovirus protein (antigen) in a dog's faeces. It can help detect parvo in a puppy with vomiting and bloody diarrhoea.

What this test checks

  • Canine parvovirus antigen (a virus protein) in faeces
  • Whether the dog is passing the virus in its stool now
  • A simple positive or negative kit result for parvo only

Benefits of this test

  • Gives a quick answer, which matters when a puppy is getting weaker.
  • Needs only a stool sample, so there is no blood draw from a sick, dehydrated puppy.
  • Helps your vet decide quickly whether parvo is likely and how to protect other dogs.
  • Can be followed by PCR if the kit result does not match the signs.
  • Useful for breeders and shelters who need to check a sick puppy fast.

When your vet may advise it

  • A puppy has sudden vomiting and diarrhoea, especially bloody or very foul-smelling.
  • A puppy is very dull, refuses food and has a fever.
  • An unvaccinated or partly vaccinated puppy has been near a sick dog.
  • A new puppy from a shop, breeder or shelter falls sick in the first days or weeks.
  • Another puppy in the same litter or kennel has been found to have parvo.
  • Your vet wants a quick first check before deciding on isolation and further tests.

About this test

Parvo is a gut infection caused by canine parvovirus. A sick dog passes large amounts of the virus in its stool. This rapid kit looks for a protein of the virus, called an antigen, in a small stool sample.

The stool is mixed with a liquid and placed on a test device that works like a small test strip. Coloured lines show whether virus protein is present. The kit gives a result in minutes, which is why vets often choose it first for a puppy with vomiting and bloody diarrhoea.

This is the rapid antigen kit version of the test. PCR and ELISA tests for parvo are listed separately, and your vet may ask for PCR if the signs strongly point to parvo but the kit is negative.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. Collect a fresh stool sample in a clean, closed container, avoid soil or grass, and tell your vet if the puppy was vaccinated recently. Ask for free sample collection anywhere in Bhopal, or ask your local vet or clinic to send the sample to the lab by courier or bus parcel.

Reading the result

A positive kit may indicate parvovirus infection, although a recent live vaccine can sometimes cause a weak positive. A negative kit does not fully rule parvo out, so a registered veterinarian reads the result with the puppy's signs, vaccination history and blood counts.

Questions about Canine Parvo Virus Ag (Rapid Test)

Should I choose the rapid kit or the PCR for my puppy?
Your vet decides. The rapid kit is quick and needs only stool. PCR looks for the virus's DNA and can find smaller amounts, so it is often used when the kit is negative but the signs still point to parvo.
Can the rapid parvo test be negative when my puppy has parvo?
Yes. The kit may miss the virus very early in the illness, late in recovery, or when only a little virus is in the stool. If signs continue, your vet may repeat the kit or send the sample for PCR.
Can a recently vaccinated puppy test positive?
Sometimes. After a live parvo vaccine, vaccine virus can pass in the stool for a short time, and some kits may give a weak positive. Tell your vet the vaccination date so the result is read correctly.
My puppy has diarrhoea. Should I wait a day before testing?
No. Parvo can leave a puppy weak and dehydrated within a day or two. Contact a vet at once if there is bloody diarrhoea, repeated vomiting or the puppy stops eating or drinking. Rapid kit results are normally reported the same day or within 24 hours; confirm the timing when you book.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
