Milk can show the health of the udder, the hygiene of the dairy and whether the milk has been mixed with something else. These tests are for dairy farmers, milk vendors and cooperatives who keep cows and buffaloes. Results are for your information and do not replace official food-safety testing.
Mastitis is inflammation of the udder. Tests such as the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and somatic cell count can show hidden (subclinical) mastitis even when the milk looks normal. Milk culture and PCR name the germ, and culture also shows which antibiotics may work. Your veterinarian decides what to do with the result.
These measure fat, solids-not-fat, protein and lactose, and show how clean the milk was by counting bacteria or by simple reduction tests. Acidity and heat-stability checks show how fresh the milk is.
Quick chemical checks can look for added water, starch, urea, detergent and other additives. Rapid kits can check for antibiotic residues, and ELISA or kit tests can check for aflatoxin M1. The exact tests and methods are confirmed when you book.
Milk can also be used for progesterone, to help judge the breeding cycle, for ketone (BHB) screening in fresh animals, and for brucellosis screening with the milk ring test.
Wash and dry the teats, throw away the first few streams, and collect into a clean, sterile container. Label each quarter, keep the sample cool and bring it quickly. For a mastitis culture, take the sample before any antibiotic is used. The lab tells you more when you book.
Mastitis, milk quality, adulteration, antibiotic residue and breeding tests on milk from cows and buffaloes.

Mastitis testing works like a ladder. A cowside CMT shows which udder quarter is inflamed, a cell count measures how much, a culture finds the germ and shows which antibiotics may work, and RT-PCR finds germs that are hard to grow.

Brucellosis is a herd disease that causes abortion in cows and buffaloes and can pass to people through birth fluids and raw milk. Blood antibody tests, a milk ring test and RT-PCR help a vet find it, and gloves and washing protect the people handling the animals.
