Kitten Diarrhoea and the Stool Tests a Vet May Ask For

Short answer

Kitten diarrhoea can come from worms, parasites, viruses or stress. Stool tests, a Giardia kit, a panleukopenia kit and an RT-PCR panel help the vet find out which, and a sick kitten needs prompt care.

Diarrhoea in a kitten can come from worms, tiny gut parasites, a virus, a change of food or plain stress. The stool alone does not tell a vet which one it is, so tests help. A kitten that is also vomiting, hiding or refusing food needs to see a vet without delay.

Why is kitten diarrhoea taken seriously?

A kitten has very little fluid to spare. Watery stool can leave it weak and dried out far faster than in a grown cat, and the cause may be something that spreads to its littermates. Some causes are minor. Others are serious, and they can look the same in the first hours.

Tell the vet how many animals share the space. If other kittens or cats at home have loose stool too, that points the vet towards a cause that spreads.

Go to a vet promptly if the kitten is dull, vomiting, not eating, passing blood or straining. Do not give human medicines or try any treatment from home, because these can harm a small kitten. Note when the diarrhoea began and what the kitten ate, and take a clear photo of the stool for your vet.

What does a routine stool test look at?

A Stool Routine is usually the first test. The stool is checked for colour, mucus, blood and undigested food, and a small smear is studied under the microscope for eggs, parasites and cells. It can help detect worms and some single-celled parasites. It cannot see a virus, so a normal result does not clear the kitten of one.

If the kitten with diarrhoea lives with others, keep it alone on clean paper for a short while so you know the sample is its own. Scoop only stool into a dry lidded pot. Because some gut germs of cats can pass to people, wear gloves, wash your hands and speak to a doctor if anyone at home is unwell.

Where does a Giardia kit help?

Giardia is a microscopic parasite that lives in the gut and leaves the body in stool. The Giardia Faecal Antigen (Rapid Test) looks for a protein from the parasite in a stool sample, so it can give a quick answer even when the parasite is hard to spot under the microscope.

Giardia is shed on and off, so a negative kit does not always rule it out. The vet may repeat the test on another sample if the kitten still has loose stool.

A positive result is one clue among many. A kitten can also carry Giardia without any signs, so the vet weighs the result against how the kitten looks and what else the stool shows.

How do the panleukopenia kit and the RT-PCR panel fit in?

Panleukopenia is a serious virus illness of kittens that attacks the gut. The Feline Parvo Virus Ag (Rapid Test) looks for the virus in stool and gives a first answer. A negative kit does not always rule it out, particularly if the sample was taken at an awkward moment in the illness.

RT-PCR (real-time PCR) looks for the genetic material of germs. The Feline Diarrhoea RT-PCR Panel typically covers several germs linked with gut illness in cats, and the exact list is confirmed when you book. Vets may choose it when kits and stool microscopy leave doubt, when the kitten is very sick or when several kittens are affected. The Cat Viral RT-PCR Panel groups RT-PCR tests for several cat viruses in a single booking, again with the exact list confirmed by the lab.

Why is one test rarely the full answer?

A kitten can have more than one problem at the same time, such as worms together with Giardia, or a virus on top of a parasite. That is why vets often combine a stool test with a kit or a panel, and sometimes repeat a test on another day.

A registered veterinarian reads every result with the kitten's age, signs, food and background. A clear result does not always mean the kitten is fine, and a positive one does not tell the whole story. Your vet may start treatment, repeat a test or add others.

Common questions

Why does my kitten have diarrhoea?
Common reasons are worms, gut parasites such as Giardia, viral infections, a change in food and stress. The stool alone cannot show which one it is, so a vet may use stool tests, rapid kits or an RT-PCR panel.
When should I take a kitten with diarrhoea to the vet?
Go without delay if the kitten is dull, vomiting, not eating, passing blood or straining. Even a bright kitten with watery stool should be seen promptly, because small kittens dry out quickly.
What does a Giardia rapid test show?
It can help detect a protein from Giardia, a microscopic gut parasite, in a stool sample. Giardia is shed on and off, so a negative kit does not always rule it out and your vet may repeat the test.
What is a feline diarrhoea RT-PCR panel?
It is a group of RT-PCR tests that look for the genetic material of several germs linked with gut illness in cats. The exact list is confirmed when you book. A vet reads the result with the kitten's signs and other tests.
