Bordetella bronchiseptica RT-PCR

What this test checks

  • Bordetella bronchiseptica DNA on a swab from the nose or throat
  • Whether this bacterium is present in a dog or cat with cough, sneezing or nasal discharge

When your vet may advise it

  • A dog with a harsh, honking cough after boarding, a shelter stay or contact with other dogs
  • A cat or kitten with sneezing, nasal discharge or cough, especially in a home with many cats
  • A cough that keeps coming back or does not settle as your vet expects
  • Several animals in a kennel, shelter or cattery fall ill with breathing signs

About this test

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a bacterium that infects the windpipe and airways. In dogs it is one of the common causes of kennel cough, a harsh, honking cough that spreads where many dogs meet, such as kennels and shelters. In cats it can cause sneezing, nasal discharge and coughing, and kittens can develop pneumonia, which is a lung infection. The test uses a swab rubbed inside the nose or throat. Healthy animals can carry the bacterium, and a kennel cough vaccine given into the nose may also be picked up, so a positive result needs care. A registered veterinarian interprets it alongside the cough, other signs and recent vaccinations.

How to prepare

Your vet takes a swab from deep in the nose or the back of the throat. Mention any recent vaccine given into the nose and any medicines. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Bordetella bronchiseptica RT-PCR

Does a positive Bordetella PCR mean my dog has kennel cough?
Not always. It shows Bordetella DNA was found, but healthy dogs can carry the bacterium and a nasal vaccine can also be detected. Kennel cough often involves viruses too, so your vet reads the result with the cough, other signs and vaccination history.
Can cats get Bordetella bronchiseptica?
Yes. Cats can catch it, often in homes or shelters with many cats, and it can cause sneezing, nasal discharge and coughing. Young kittens may become more seriously ill. A swab PCR can help your vet confirm the bacterium is present.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
