What this test checks
- Neospora caninum DNA in EDTA blood or in tissue, such as from an aborted calf
- Whether the parasite is present in an abortion case or in a puppy with nerve or muscle signs
When your vet may advise it
- A cow or buffalo aborts, especially when more than one abortion happens in the herd
- Your vet is looking into an abortion and has tissue from the aborted calf
- A puppy develops stiff, weak or paralysed hind legs
- An adult dog has unexplained muscle weakness or nerve signs
About this test
Neospora caninum is a parasite. Dogs are its main host and pass its egg-like forms in their faeces. Cows and buffaloes can be infected by eating feed or drinking water soiled by dog faeces, and an infected mother can pass it to the calf in the womb. In cattle and buffaloes it is a known cause of abortion. In puppies it can cause stiff, weak hind legs that slowly get worse. PCR detects parasite DNA in blood or tissue, such as the brain of an aborted calf. A negative result does not rule infection out. A registered veterinarian reads it with antibody tests, the history and other findings.
How to prepare
Your vet takes blood or collects tissue from an aborted calf. Keep the aborted calf and afterbirth cool, covered and away from dogs until the vet sees them. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
