Leishmania RT-PCR
Leishmania RT-PCR looks for the DNA of Leishmania parasites in a dog's blood, bone marrow or lymph node sample. It can help your vet confirm leishmaniasis, a slow, long-lasting disease spread by sand fly bites.

What this test checks
- Leishmania parasite DNA in blood, bone marrow or a lymph node sample
- Signs of the parasite in samples where it may be hard to see under a microscope
- A result your vet can compare with antibody tests and routine blood work
When your vet may advise it
- Weight loss, hair loss or scaly skin, especially around the eyes, ears or nose
- Swollen lymph nodes, overgrown nails or nose bleeds without a clear cause
- A positive or unclear Leishmania antibody result that your vet wants to check
- A dog that has lived in or travelled to an area where leishmaniasis is found
About this test
Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by tiny Leishmania parasites that sand flies pass on when they bite. Inside a dog, they can slowly harm the skin, eyes, kidneys and blood. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) copies a small piece of the parasite's DNA many times so the lab can detect it, even when few parasites are present. Your vet chooses the sample: blood, bone marrow (the soft tissue inside bones) or a lymph node aspirate, which is cells drawn out with a fine needle. A negative result does not always rule the disease out, and a registered veterinarian reads the result with your dog's signs, history and other tests.
How to prepare
Your vet chooses and takes the sample, because bone marrow and lymph node samples need a trained hand. Mention any medicines your dog is taking. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
