Giardia RT-PCR
Giardia RT-PCR looks for the DNA of Giardia, a tiny gut parasite, in a faeces sample from a dog or cat. It can help your vet find Giardia as a cause of diarrhoea when cysts are hard to see under a microscope.

What this test checks
- Giardia DNA in a fresh faeces sample from a dog or cat
- Small amounts of Giardia that a microscope check for cysts may miss
When your vet may advise it
- Diarrhoea that keeps coming back, or soft, pale and smelly stools
- A puppy or kitten with diarrhoea or poor weight gain
- Earlier faeces tests were negative but your vet still suspects Giardia
- Several pets in a shelter, kennel or home with many animals have diarrhoea
About this test
Giardia is a single-celled parasite that lives in the small intestine. Dogs and cats pick it up by swallowing cysts, its hardy resting stage, from dirty water, soil or faeces. It can cause soft, pale, smelly or greasy diarrhoea and weight loss, most often in puppies, kittens and animals kept in groups. Many animals carry it without signs. Cysts are passed off and on, so a microscope check can miss them. PCR detects Giardia DNA and can find small amounts. Because it is so sensitive, a positive result in a healthy animal needs care. A registered veterinarian decides what the result means for your pet.
How to prepare
Collect a fresh faeces sample into a clean, closed container. Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards. Your vet may ask for samples from more than one day. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
