Canine Parvo RT-PCR
Canine Parvo RT-PCR is a lab test that finds the genetic material (DNA) of canine parvovirus in a dog's blood or stool. It can help detect parvo when a rapid stool kit is negative or unclear.

What this test checks
- DNA of canine parvovirus in whole blood or stool
- Whether the virus is present in the sample
- A positive or negative result for parvovirus only
- Small amounts of virus that a rapid kit can sometimes miss
Benefits of this test
- Can detect very small amounts of virus, so it can help when a rapid kit is negative.
- Works on whole blood or stool, which helps when a weak puppy cannot pass stool on demand.
- Helps your vet tell parvo from other causes of vomiting and diarrhoea, such as worms or a food upset.
- Early confirmation helps your vet plan care and protect other dogs at home.
- Helps breeders and kennels learn what is making a litter sick.

When your vet may advise it
- A puppy has repeated vomiting and diarrhoea, especially if it is bloody or smells very foul.
- A dog is dull, refuses food and has a fever.
- A rapid parvo kit was negative, but the signs still look like parvo.
- An unvaccinated or partly vaccinated puppy has met a dog with parvo.
- A newly bought or adopted puppy falls ill within the first weeks at home.
- Your vet finds a very low white blood cell count in a dog with vomiting and diarrhoea.
About this test
Canine parvovirus causes parvo, a serious gut infection that mostly affects puppies and dogs that are not fully vaccinated. It brings vomiting, bloody and foul-smelling diarrhoea, fever and quick loss of body water (dehydration).
This test uses PCR, which makes many copies of a tiny piece of the virus's DNA so that it can be seen. The lab tests whole blood or stool, as your vet advises. Because PCR can pick up very small amounts of virus, vets commonly use it to confirm parvo when the signs fit but a rapid kit is negative or unclear.
This entry is the PCR form of the test. The rapid antigen kit and the ELISA tests are listed separately. Parvo can turn serious within a day or two, so a sick puppy should see a vet without delay.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed, and your vet will advise whether blood or stool is sampled. If stool is used, collect it fresh in a clean, closed container, and tell the lab if the dog was vaccinated recently. Free sample collection is available anywhere in Bhopal; from other places your vet can send the sample by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A positive result may indicate current canine parvovirus infection, but a live vaccine given recently can also give a positive PCR result. A negative result makes parvo less likely, and a registered veterinarian reads either result with the puppy's signs, vaccination history and blood counts.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

What Is RT-PCR in Veterinary Testing?
RT-PCR is a lab test that finds the genetic material of a germ in a sample such as a swab, blood or dung. It copies a tiny trace many times until it is easy to detect. A vet reads the result with the animal's signs.
