Canine Adenovirus (CAV-1 / CAV-2) RT-PCR
The canine adenovirus RT-PCR looks for DNA of canine adenovirus type 1, the cause of infectious canine hepatitis, and type 2, a kennel cough virus. It can help find a viral cause of liver or breathing illness in dogs.

What this test checks
- DNA of canine adenovirus type 1, the cause of infectious canine hepatitis
- DNA of canine adenovirus type 2, one of the kennel cough viruses
When your vet may advise it
- A dog, especially an unvaccinated puppy, with fever, vomiting and signs of liver illness
- A harsh cough spreading among dogs in a kennel, shelter or boarding home
- A cloudy blue eye after a feverish illness
About this test
Canine adenovirus has two types. Type 1 (CAV-1) causes infectious canine hepatitis, a liver infection that can bring fever, vomiting, belly pain, bleeding problems and sometimes a cloudy blue eye, and it can be severe in young puppies. Type 2 (CAV-2) is one of the viruses behind kennel cough, a contagious cough. PCR detects the virus's DNA. Your vet chooses the sample: a nose, eye or throat swab for a cough, or EDTA blood or urine when hepatitis is suspected. A recent vaccine can sometimes be picked up by the test, so share the vaccine record. A registered veterinarian interprets the result with the dog's signs and other tests.
How to prepare
No fasting is usually needed. Your vet decides between a swab, EDTA blood or urine, and you should share the dog's vaccine record. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
