Canine Diarrhoea RT-PCR Panel
The Canine Diarrhoea RT-PCR Panel is a stool test that looks for the genetic material of several common causes of diarrhoea in dogs, such as parvovirus, coronavirus, Giardia, Cryptosporidium and Salmonella. The exact list is confirmed when you book.

What this test checks
- Canine parvovirus - a hardy virus that can cause severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, mainly in puppies and unvaccinated dogs
- Canine coronavirus - a gut virus that usually causes milder diarrhoea, mostly in young dogs
- Giardia - a tiny single-celled parasite that can cause soft, smelly or greasy stools that come and go
- Cryptosporidium - a very small gut parasite that more often makes young or weak dogs ill
- Salmonella - a bacterium that can cause diarrhoea and can also be carried by dogs that look healthy
- The exact list of germs, which the lab confirms when you book
Benefits of this test
- Checks several common causes of diarrhoea from one stool sample.
- Can pick up small amounts of a germ that a microscope may miss.
- Helps your vet tell apart germs that cause similar signs.
- Can show when a dog has more than one infection at the same time.
- Helps your vet plan care, further tests and hygiene at home or in a kennel.
When your vet may advise it
- A puppy with vomiting and bloody diarrhoea, which needs a vet visit without delay.
- Diarrhoea that does not settle, or keeps coming back.
- Several dogs in one home, kennel or shelter with diarrhoea at the same time.
- A new puppy or rescue dog with loose or smelly stools.
- A rapid test or stool routine result that does not match the dog's signs.
About this test
Diarrhoea in dogs can have many causes, from a sudden change of food to serious infections. Several germs cause similar signs, especially in the early stages, so it can be hard to tell them apart by looking at the dog. This panel uses PCR (polymerase chain reaction), a test that finds and copies tiny pieces of a germ's genetic material (DNA or RNA). One stool sample can be checked for several germs at the same time.
The panel typically covers canine parvovirus, which can cause severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea in puppies, and canine coronavirus, which usually causes milder diarrhoea. It also typically looks for Giardia and Cryptosporidium, two tiny parasites, and Salmonella, a bacterium. The exact list is confirmed when you book. Because PCR looks for genetic material, it can pick up small amounts of a germ that a microscope may miss. Your vet may still ask for a stool routine test or a parvo rapid test as well.
A registered veterinarian reads the result together with your dog's signs, age, vaccination history and other tests. Some healthy dogs carry Giardia, Cryptosporidium or Salmonella, so a positive result does not always explain the illness. Salmonella and Cryptosporidium can pass from dogs to people, so wear gloves when picking up stool, wash your hands well and speak to a doctor if anyone at home falls ill. In Bhopal, sample collection is free, and vets in other districts can send the sample by courier or bus parcel after calling the lab.
How to prepare
Collect a fresh stool sample, without soil or grass, in a clean leak-proof container, and tell your vet about any recent vaccination or medicines. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the panel with your dog's signs, age, vaccination history and other tests. A positive result means a germ's genetic material was found, but healthy dogs can carry some of these germs, and a recent parvo vaccine can sometimes give a positive. A negative result does not always rule infection out, as some germs are passed in stool only on and off.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
