IBR (BoHV-1) RT-PCR
IBR RT-PCR looks for the DNA of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), the cause of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, in a nasal swab, semen or tissue. It can help your vet confirm IBR in cows, buffaloes and breeding bulls.

What this test checks
- BoHV-1 (IBR virus) DNA in a nasal swab, semen or tissue sample
- Whether the virus is being shed at the time of sampling, for example in semen
When your vet may advise it
- High fever, nasal discharge, a red nose and cough in cows or buffaloes
- Abortion, repeat breeding or genital sores in the herd
- Checking semen from a breeding bull, when your vet or semen station asks for it
- Tissue from an aborted calf when your vet is looking for the cause
About this test
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is caused by bovine herpesvirus 1. It can cause high fever, nasal discharge, a red, sore nose, cough, watery eyes and a drop in milk. It can also lead to abortion, poor fertility and sores on the genitals of cows and bulls. After infection the virus hides in the nerves for life and can return at times of stress. PCR detects virus DNA in a nasal swab, semen or tissue, and is often used to check semen from breeding bulls. A negative result does not prove an animal is free of hidden virus, so vets may add antibody tests. A registered veterinarian decides what it means.
How to prepare
Your vet takes the nasal swab, semen or tissue and packs it as the lab advises. Tell the vet about any IBR vaccination in the herd. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Cattle Viral RT-PCR Panel: FMD, LSD, BVD, Bluetongue and IBR
A cattle viral RT-PCR panel tests for five viruses in one booking: FMD, lumpy skin disease, BVD, bluetongue and IBR. It helps when a sick cow or buffalo has signs that fit more than one virus.
