Cryptosporidium RT-PCR

Cryptosporidium RT-PCR

Cryptosporidium RT-PCR looks for the DNA of Cryptosporidium, a very small gut parasite, in faeces. It can help your vet find a cause of diarrhoea in calves, dogs and cats, and the parasite can also infect people.

What this test checks

  • Cryptosporidium DNA in a faeces sample from a calf, dog or cat
  • Oocysts that may be too small or too few to spot under a microscope

When your vet may advise it

  • Young calves with watery diarrhoea, especially when several fall ill
  • A puppy or kitten with diarrhoea that does not settle
  • A dog or cat with weak immunity and long-lasting diarrhoea
  • Earlier faeces tests found no cause, but your vet still suspects Cryptosporidium

About this test

Cryptosporidium is a single-celled parasite that lives in the lining of the gut. It is a common cause of watery diarrhoea in young calves of cows and buffaloes, and it can also affect dogs and cats, especially the young or weak. Animals swallow its tough oocysts, tiny egg-like forms, from soiled water, feed, bedding or teats. Oocysts are so small that they are easy to miss under a microscope, so PCR, which detects the parasite's DNA, can help. The amount passed can vary, so a negative result does not always rule it out. A registered veterinarian reads the result with the animal's age, signs and other diarrhoea tests.

How to prepare

Collect fresh faeces into a clean, closed container while wearing gloves, then wash your hands well. The lab tells you how to label and send it. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Cryptosporidium RT-PCR

Can people catch Cryptosporidium from calves or pets?
Yes, Cryptosporidium can infect people, and calves with diarrhoea are a well-known source. Wash your hands after handling animals or samples, wear gloves, keep children away from sick calves and see a doctor if you get diarrhoea.
Why test for Cryptosporidium when calves already have scours?
Because scours, or calf diarrhoea, has several causes, including viruses, bacteria and other parasites. Knowing whether Cryptosporidium is present helps your vet plan care and hygiene steps for the whole group. Your vet may add other faeces tests at the same time.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Calf Scours: Rapid Kits and RT-PCR Panels

Calf scours is diarrhoea in young calves, and the danger is dehydration. A rapid kit on fresh dung can point to rotavirus, coronavirus, cryptosporidium or E. coli K99, and an RT-PCR panel can search more widely. Call the vet first; the tests help find the cause.
