Puppy: lab tests and health checks

From birth to about the first birthday. Small breeds grow up sooner and giant breeds later, so ask your vet about your puppy.

Puppies pick up worms, gut infections and tick-borne illness easily, and they become very sick very fast. Lab tests give your vet an early, clear picture. This page lists the tests vets often ask about in a puppy, and why.

Why testing changes at this age

A puppy's body is small and still learning to fight germs. A problem that an adult dog shrugs off can drain a puppy in a day or two, so early checks matter more at this age.

What vets often check

The main checks for a puppy

Worms and gut parasites

Stool tests look for worm eggs and parasites that cause a pot belly, poor growth and loose motions.

Blood count

A CBC can help show anaemia or infection, which worms and ticks may cause.

Parvo and distemper when sick

Rapid tests and RT-PCR help name a virus when a puppy has vomiting, loose motions or discharge from the eyes and nose.

Liver checks for slow growers

A bile acids test is used when a young dog grows poorly or acts strangely after meals.

A registered veterinarian chooses the tests that suit your animal's signs, age and history. This page is general information, not advice for one animal.

First Lab Tests for a New Puppy: A Simple Checklist

A new puppy usually needs a stool test first, to look for worms and gut parasites. A blood count and a parvo kit are added only when the puppy looks unwell. Your vet decides the list.

Puppy With Loose Motions: Which Lab Tests Help the Vet

A puppy with loose motions should see a vet quickly. The vet may use a stool test, a parvo rapid test, RT-PCR and a blood count, each answering a different question about the cause.

Worm Checks in Puppies: Stool Tests Explained

Worm checks in puppies use a stool sample. A flotation test finds worm eggs, a direct smear finds moving protozoa and a coccidia count measures cysts, so each suits different signs.

Canine Distemper: RT-PCR Versus the Rapid Test

For suspected canine distemper, the rapid test gives a quick first look, RT-PCR looks for the virus's genetic material and can find small amounts, and the ELISA adds information from the immune side. Vets often read them together.

Bile Acids Test: Looking for Liver Shunts in Young Pets

A bile acids test checks how well the liver clears bile acids from the blood, using one sample before a meal and one after. In young pets with poor growth or odd behaviour, it can help show if the liver is not getting its full share of blood.

Questions about testing a puppy

Which lab tests does a puppy need?
Most puppies benefit from a stool test for worms and a blood count if they look dull, thin or pale. Parvo or distemper tests are for puppies with signs of illness. A registered veterinarian chooses the tests that suit your animal's signs, age and history.
Is a stool sample really needed for a puppy?
Yes. Many puppies carry worms or gut parasites without clear signs, and only a stool test can find the eggs. Bring a fresh sample in a clean, dry container.
When should a puppy see a vet urgently?
Repeated vomiting, loose or bloody motions, refusing food or unusual sleepiness need a vet without delay. Do not wait for a lab report before getting help.
