About this test

Stool (dung in cows and buffaloes) tells a lot about the gut. A stool routine test starts with a close look at the sample. The lab notes its colour and firmness, and whether it has mucus, visible blood, worms or tapeworm segments.

Next, a small portion is mixed and examined under the microscope. The lab looks for worm eggs and larvae, single-celled parasites such as Giardia and coccidia, red and white blood cells, undigested food and yeast. This helps show whether the cause is a parasite, an infection or a problem with digestion.

Worms and parasites shed eggs on and off, so one normal result does not always rule them out. Vets may ask for a repeat sample if signs continue. Your vet decides what the findings mean for your animal.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. Collect a spoonful of fresh stool (or a handful of dung from a cow or buffalo) from the middle of the stool, not from the soil, into a clean, dry container. Anywhere in Bhopal, collection is free; from outside the city, send the fresh sample by courier, bus parcel or through your vet after calling the lab.

Reading the result

A finding names the parasite or sign that was seen, and a normal result means nothing was seen in that sample. A registered veterinarian reads it with your animal's signs and history and may ask for a repeat sample.

Questions about Stool Routine

What worms and parasites can a stool routine test find?
It can find eggs or larvae of common worms and single-celled parasites such as Giardia and coccidia, depending on what is shed in that sample. The parasites that matter most differ between dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes, so your vet explains the report for your animal.
If the stool test is normal, can my animal still have worms?
Yes. Some worms shed eggs only now and then, and young worms do not lay eggs yet. A single normal result does not fully rule worms out, so your vet may ask for another sample or a different test if signs continue.
How fresh should the stool sample be?
As fresh as possible, ideally collected within a few hours and kept cool. In old stool, eggs can hatch, parasites can break down and the sample dries out, which can hide what is really there. Use a clean, dry container and note when the stool was passed.
Does this test show hidden blood in the stool?
Not reliably. It notes blood that you can see, and the microscope may show red blood cells. Tiny hidden amounts are checked with a separate Stool Occult Blood test. Tell your vet if the stool is black and tarry or has fresh red blood.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
