Worm Checks in Puppies: Stool Tests Explained
Short answer
Worm checks in puppies use a stool sample. A flotation test finds worm eggs, a direct smear finds moving protozoa and a coccidia count measures cysts, so each suits different signs.

A worm check in a puppy is done on a stool sample, which is examined under a microscope for worm eggs, tiny parasites and their cysts. A flotation test, a direct smear and a coccidia count each find different things, so your vet picks the ones that suit your puppy's signs.
Why do puppies pick up worms so easily?
Puppies explore with their mouths. They lick soil, chew grass and sniff the stool of other dogs, and each habit can bring worm eggs inside. Roundworms can also reach a puppy from its mother, so worms are not a sign of a dirty home. Tapeworms are linked to fleas, which a puppy may swallow while biting at its skin.
Worms do not always cause signs. When they do, owners may notice a pot belly, a thin body, a dull coat, loose stool, or a worm in the stool or vomit. A stool test shows what is really there, so your vet can decide whether treatment is needed instead of guessing.
What does a flotation test find?
The Faecal Flotation Test (Worm Eggs & Oocysts) mixes stool with a liquid that is heavier than most worm eggs. The eggs and cysts rise to the top, where they are lifted onto a slide and examined. It is commonly used to look for roundworm, hookworm and whipworm eggs, and for coccidia.
It has limits. Worms that are still young do not lay eggs, heavy eggs may not float well, and tapeworm often shows up as small segments rather than eggs. Eggs are also passed on some days and not on others, so one clear result does not always mean a puppy is free of worms.
What does a direct smear show?
For a Faecal Direct Smear (Protozoa), a small drop of fresh stool is mixed with saline on a slide and looked at straight away. Protozoa are tiny single-celled parasites, and Giardia is one example. In their active stage they move about under the microscope, and they change or die soon after the stool is passed. That is why this test needs the freshest sample you can bring.
If you want a direct smear, say so when you book, so that the lab can tell you how quickly the sample must arrive.
What is a coccidia oocyst count?
Coccidia are single-celled parasites that live in the lining of the gut. They pass tiny egg-like cysts, called oocysts, in the stool. The Coccidia Oocyst Count (OPG) counts these in a measured amount of stool, and OPG stands for oocysts per gram. Puppies are affected more often than adult dogs, and a heavy infection can bring loose or mucus-covered stool.
The count helps show how many parasites are present, but a number alone does not decide anything. A registered veterinarian reads it with the puppy's age, signs and the other stool results, because oocysts are sometimes found in a puppy that looks well.
How do I collect a good sample?
- Choose a clean, dry container that closes tightly.
- Collect soon after the puppy passes stool, lifting a spoonful from the top rather than from the ground.
- Do not add water, soil, grass or anything else.
- If the stool is loose, collect it from a clean sheet and tell the vet or lab.
- Put the puppy's name and the time on the lid, keep it cool and bring it without delay.
Gloves are sensible, and so is a good hand wash afterwards. Some worms in puppy stool can pass to people, children in particular, so see a doctor if anyone in the family becomes unwell.
Do I need all three tests?
Not necessarily. Your vet may choose one test or several, depending on the puppy's signs and age. The Puppy & Kitten Starter Check typically groups a blood count, stool tests, a blood sugar reading and a protein check for young pets, and the exact list is confirmed when you book.
If the puppy keeps having signs after a clear report, another sample on a different day can be worth testing. Your vet may start treatment, repeat the test or add other tests, and a puppy that vomits, refuses food or seems very weak needs to be seen without delay.
