Milk Aflatoxin M1 Test
A milk aflatoxin M1 test checks milk for aflatoxin M1, a toxin that can appear when cows or buffaloes eat feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1. It is done by ELISA or a rapid kit, and the method is confirmed when you book.

What this test checks
- Aflatoxin M1, a mould toxin, in a milk sample
- Whether animals may have eaten feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1
- A measured level or a positive or negative result, depending on the method confirmed when you book
Benefits of this test
- Checks milk for a toxin you cannot see, smell or taste.
- Can point to a feed problem that would otherwise go unnoticed.
- Helps dairies, vendors and cooperatives check milk they collect or sell.
- Can be repeated after a change of feed source to see whether the result changes.
- Uses an ordinary sample of fresh milk.
When your vet may advise it
- Routine checks of milk at a collection centre, dairy or cooperative.
- When animals have started on a new batch of oilseed cake, maize or other concentrate.
- When stored feed has been damp or looks mouldy.
- After the rainy season, when moulds grow more easily on stored feed.
- When a milk buyer asks for an aflatoxin check.
About this test
A milk aflatoxin M1 test checks milk for aflatoxin M1, a toxin that can appear in milk when cows or buffaloes eat feed contaminated with aflatoxin B1. Aflatoxins are poisons made by certain moulds (fungi). These moulds can grow on feeds such as groundnut cake, maize and cottonseed cake, especially when the feed is stored damp or warm. Feed can carry the toxin even when no mould can be seen, so the problem is easy to miss.
When an animal eats feed with aflatoxin B1, her liver changes part of it into aflatoxin M1, which then passes into her milk. Boiling or pasteurising milk does not remove aflatoxin M1, so it can carry through into milk products. Long-term intake of aflatoxins is linked to liver harm in people. The test is done by ELISA (a lab method that uses antibodies and a colour change) or by a rapid kit, and the method is confirmed when you book.
A positive result mainly tells you about the feed the animals have eaten, so your vet or feed adviser may want to look at the feed and how it is stored. The test checks the milk, not the feed itself. A registered veterinarian or adviser can help you read the result with the animals' feed history. The result is for your information and does not replace official food-safety testing. Dairy farmers, vendors and cooperatives in Bhopal and other districts of Madhya Pradesh can call or WhatsApp to book, and samples from outside Bhopal can be sent by courier or bus parcel.
How to prepare
Send fresh milk in a clean, labelled bottle, keep it cool, and note which feeds the animals have been eating and where they were stored. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Reading the result
The result is read with the animals' feed history, and a registered veterinarian or feed adviser can help you understand it. A positive result points to contaminated feed rather than a specific illness, and a negative result applies only to the milk sampled at that time. The result is for your information and does not replace official food-safety testing.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Antibiotic Residue and Aflatoxin M1 Tests in Milk
An antibiotic residue test looks for traces of medicine in milk, and an aflatoxin M1 test looks for a mould toxin that moulds in feed can pass into milk. Dairies ask for both, along with a bacterial count, to judge milk quality.
