Milk Composition (Fat, SNF, Protein & Lactose)
A milk composition test measures the main solids in milk: fat, SNF (solids-not-fat), protein and lactose. Dairy farmers, vendors and cooperatives use it to check cow and buffalo milk for pricing, feeding decisions and signs of dilution.

What this test checks
- Fat - the cream part of milk, which differs between cows and buffaloes
- SNF (solids-not-fat) - all the solids in milk other than fat
- Protein - mainly casein, the protein that forms curd and paneer
- Lactose - the natural sugar in milk
- Total solids (fat and SNF together), where the report includes it
Benefits of this test
- Helps you check the fat and SNF of milk you sell or buy.
- Lets you compare milk from different animals, breeds or months.
- Can give an early hint of added water, to be checked further.
- Gives you and your vet or dairy adviser facts to discuss feeding and herd care.
- Useful for vendors and cooperatives that buy milk on fat and SNF.
When your vet may advise it
- You want to check the fat and SNF of milk before selling it.
- Milk payments have dropped because of low fat or SNF readings at the collection centre.
- You suspect milk has been diluted with water somewhere along the way.
- Comparing milk from different animals, breeds or seasons.
- Before and after a change in feeding, when your vet or dairy adviser wants to see the effect.
About this test
A milk composition test measures the main solids in milk: fat, SNF, protein and lactose. SNF means solids-not-fat. It is everything in milk apart from water and fat, mainly protein, lactose (the natural milk sugar) and minerals. These values tell dairy farmers, milk vendors and cooperatives what the milk is made of. This matters because milk is often bought and sold on its fat and SNF.
Milk composition changes naturally. Buffalo milk usually has more fat than cow milk. Breed, stage of lactation, season, health and feeding all play a part, and udder problems such as mastitis can also change the milk. Even within one milking, the first milk is thinner and the last milk is richer in fat. So the sample must come from the whole milking and be mixed well before it is poured, or the result will not match the milk in the can.
Farmers commonly use the results to check the milk they sell, to compare animals and to discuss feeding with their vet or dairy adviser. A low fat or SNF value can point to added water, but it can also have natural causes, so one result is not proof of dilution. For a closer check for added water, a freezing point test or an adulteration panel may help. The results are for the owner's information and do not replace official food-safety or quality testing. Farmers and vendors in Bhopal can book by phone or WhatsApp, and samples from other districts can be sent by courier or bus parcel.
How to prepare
Mix the whole milking well, then pour a sample into a clean, dry, labelled bottle, close it tightly and keep it cool, adding nothing unless the lab asks you to. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Reading the result
The values are read with the animal's species, breed, stage of lactation and feeding, because milk solids vary naturally, and a registered veterinarian or dairy adviser can help you understand them. A poorly mixed sample can give a false fat value, and a low fat or SNF is not proof of adulteration. Results are for your information and do not replace official food-safety testing.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
