Glucose Random (RBS)
A Glucose Random (RBS) test measures the sugar in the blood at any time of day, with no fasting needed. It can help find diabetes, low sugar and energy problems in dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes.
- Sample
- Fluoride plasma
- Quantity
- 2 mL
- Report
- Same day to 24 hours
- Collection
- Free in Bhopal
What this test checks
- Glucose (blood sugar) in plasma at the time of sampling
- High blood sugar, which may be seen in diabetes or after stress
- Low blood sugar, which can cause weakness, shaking or fits
- A quick check of the energy supply in sick, weak or newborn animals
Benefits of this test
- Needs no fasting, so it can be done at any time, even in a sick animal.
- Can help detect diabetes in dogs and cats, and low sugar in weak puppies and kittens.
- Helps your vet check blood sugar in a cow or buffalo that is weak or has stopped eating.
- The report is normally ready the same day or within 24 hours.
- Can be repeated to see how blood sugar is changing.

When your vet may advise it
- A dog or cat that drinks and passes urine much more than usual or loses weight while eating well.
- A small puppy or kitten that is weak, shaky or has fits.
- A pet that has collapsed, is very dull or has been vomiting for a long time.
- A diabetic pet that seems unwell, when the vet wants to check the sugar quickly.
- A high-yielding cow or buffalo that is off feed, weak or losing milk, when the vet suspects ketosis.
- Before surgery or anaesthesia.
About this test
RBS stands for random blood sugar. The test measures the glucose in the blood at the moment the sample is taken, with no fasting needed. Glucose is the main fuel for the body and the brain. Blood sugar that is too high or too low can make an animal dull, weak or even unconscious. Fasting (FBS) and after-meal (PPBS) sugar tests are separate tests.
The blood goes into a special fluoride tube. The fluoride stops the blood cells from using up the sugar after sampling, so the lab can read a value close to the true level. The plasma, which is the liquid part of the blood, is then tested with special chemicals and an instrument.
Vets use RBS to look for diabetes in dogs and cats, and to check for low sugar in weak puppies, kittens and sick animals. In milking cows and buffaloes it helps check energy problems such as ketosis, a shortage of energy in high-yielding animals.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed, but follow your vet's advice and tell the vet when the animal last ate and about any medicines. Keep a pet calm, because stress can raise sugar, especially in cats, and the blood must go into a special fluoride tube so the value stays steady. Free sample collection is available anywhere in Bhopal, and outside Bhopal your vet can send the tube to us quickly by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads a random sugar value together with your animal's signs and history, because it is only a snapshot. Normal blood sugar is different in each species, so your vet may repeat the test or add other tests.
Questions about RBS
What does RBS mean, and do I need to fast?
Why is the blood collected in a special tube?
Can stress give a high sugar reading in cats?
Is normal blood sugar the same in dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes?
Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
