Kidney Function Test (KFT)
A Kidney Function Test (KFT) is a group of blood tests that can show how well the kidneys are filtering waste out of the blood. It is done on serum from dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes.

What this test checks
- Urea or BUN (blood urea nitrogen) - a waste product from protein breakdown
- Creatinine - a waste product from muscle that healthy kidneys clear
- Salts and minerals such as sodium, potassium and phosphorus, where the panel includes them
Benefits of this test
- Shows in a simple way whether the kidneys are clearing waste properly.
- Helps your vet spot kidney problems that are not yet obvious at home.
- Helps tell whether dehydration or another illness is putting the kidneys under strain.
- Can be repeated to follow a kidney problem over time.
- Gives useful information before surgery, anaesthesia or long-term medicines.

When your vet may advise it
- A dog or cat that drinks and passes urine much more than usual.
- Vomiting, poor appetite, weight loss or low energy, especially in an older dog or cat.
- Straining to pass urine, or passing very little, which needs your vet's attention quickly.
- A cow, buffalo or calf with severe diarrhoea, dehydration or a suspected poisoning.
- Before surgery or anaesthesia.
- Regular checks for an animal with known kidney disease.
About this test
The kidneys filter waste from the blood and pass it out in the urine. They also help the body keep the right balance of water, salts and minerals. When the kidneys are weak, waste products such as urea and creatinine build up in the blood. A Kidney Function Test (KFT) measures these waste products.
The lab separates the serum, which is the clear part of clotted blood, and measures each value with special chemicals and an instrument. A KFT usually includes urea (also reported as BUN) and creatinine. It may also include salts and minerals such as sodium, potassium and phosphorus. Your report lists every value that was measured.
Vets use a KFT to look for kidney disease and to see how dehydration or illness is affecting the kidneys. It also helps them follow a known kidney problem over time. It is commonly checked before surgery or anaesthesia too.
How to prepare
For dogs and cats, many vets ask for 8 to 12 hours without food before sampling, because a meal can raise urea a little. Keep water available unless your vet says otherwise, follow your vet's advice, and tell the vet about any medicines your animal takes. Our team collects samples free anywhere in Bhopal; outside Bhopal, your vet or clinic can send the sample by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the KFT together with your animal's signs and history, hydration and urine tests. High urea or creatinine can come from the kidneys or from dehydration, so your vet may repeat the test or add more tests.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
