Lipid Profile
A lipid profile is a group of blood tests that measures the fats in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. It is done on serum from dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes.
- Sample
- Serum (plain)
- Quantity
- 2 mL
- Report
- Same day to 24 hours
- Collection
- Free in Bhopal
What this test checks
- Total cholesterol - a fat-like substance the body needs to build cells and hormones
- Triglycerides - the main fat in food and the form in which fat is stored
- HDL cholesterol - cholesterol carried back to the liver by high-density particles
- LDL cholesterol - cholesterol carried out to the tissues by low-density particles
- VLDL - the particles that carry triglycerides, where reported
Benefits of this test
- Shows several blood fat values in one serum sample.
- May point to another illness behind high blood fat in dogs and cats, such as an under-active thyroid, diabetes or pancreas trouble.
- Lets your vet repeat the test later to see whether fat levels are coming down.
- Helps your vet judge the risk of pancreas trouble when triglycerides are very high.
- Gives cow and buffalo owners one clue about energy balance and liver health around calving.
When your vet may advise it
- A dog with signs of an under-active thyroid, such as weight gain, a dull coat and sluggishness.
- A diabetic pet, or one that drinks and passes urine much more than usual.
- Repeated vomiting or belly pain, when the vet suspects pancreas trouble.
- A breed known for high blood fat, such as the Miniature Schnauzer.
- A blood sample that looks milky or creamy when the serum is separated.
- A cow or buffalo around calving that is off feed or losing body condition.
About this test
Lipids are the fats that travel in the blood. Cholesterol and triglycerides are the main ones, and they are carried by small particles called lipoproteins. After a meal, blood fat rises for some hours. If it stays high, or is too low, it can be a sign of another health problem.
The lab separates serum from the clotted blood and measures cholesterol, triglycerides and the lipoprotein fractions with special chemicals and an instrument. For dogs and cats, a sample taken after fasting is usually preferred. A recent meal raises triglycerides and can mislead the result.
Vets use a lipid profile to look for the cause of high blood fat in dogs and cats. Causes can include an under-active thyroid, diabetes and pancreas trouble. In cows and buffaloes it can give one clue about energy balance and liver health, mainly around calving.
How to prepare
For dogs and cats, about 12 hours without food is usual, with water allowed, because a recent meal raises blood fat. Follow your vet's advice, which differs for cows and buffaloes, and ask first if the animal is a puppy, kitten, diabetic or on regular medicines. Our team collects samples free anywhere in Bhopal; outside Bhopal, your vet or clinic can send the sample by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the lipid profile together with your animal's signs and history, diet and weight. A meal, another illness or a medicine can change blood fat, so a high value is often a clue to look for the cause.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
