Cat Viral RT-PCR Panel

RT-PCR tests for panleukopenia, cat flu viruses and FCoV / FIP in one booking.

4 tests in one package · Sample: Faeces + swab or effusion fluid, as the lab advises

The Cat Viral RT-PCR Panel groups RT-PCR tests for viruses that make cats ill: panleukopenia, the two main cat flu viruses (herpesvirus and calicivirus) and feline coronavirus, which is linked to FIP. RT-PCR (real-time PCR) looks for the virus's genetic material and can name the cause when signs look alike. Many healthy cats carry feline coronavirus, so a positive result on its own does not prove FIP. A registered veterinarian reads the results together with the animal's signs and history.

Tests inside this package

  • Feline panleukopenia (FPV) RT-PCR

Feline Panleukopenia (FPV) RT-PCR is a test that looks for the DNA of feline parvovirus, the cause of panleukopenia, in a cat's faeces or blood. It can help detect this severe and contagious disease of kittens.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Faeces or whole blood (EDTA)

  • Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) RT-PCR

FHV-1 RT-PCR looks for the DNA of feline herpesvirus type 1 on a swab from a cat's eye or throat. It can help your vet confirm a common cause of cat flu, eye discharge and sores on the surface of the eye.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Conjunctival or oropharyngeal swab

  • Feline calicivirus (FCV) RT-PCR

Feline calicivirus RT-PCR looks for the genetic material of feline calicivirus on a throat swab. It can help your vet confirm a common cause of cat flu, mouth ulcers and sore gums in cats.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Oropharyngeal swab

  • FCoV / FIP RT-PCR

FCoV / FIP RT-PCR is a test that looks for the genetic material (RNA) of feline coronavirus in a cat's effusion fluid, blood or faeces. Many healthy cats carry this virus, so a positive result on its own does not mean the cat has FIP.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Effusion fluid, EDTA blood or faeces

Questions about this package

Does a positive FCoV result mean my cat has FIP?
Not on its own. Many healthy cats carry feline coronavirus. Your vet reads the result with the cat's signs, fluid tests and other results before saying anything about FIP.
Which samples are needed?
It depends on the virus: faeces, swabs of the eye, nose or throat, or fluid from the belly or chest. The lab tells you which samples to collect when you book.
Can a negative result rule these viruses out?
Not always. A sample taken late, or with very little virus, can give a negative result. Your vet reads the result with the cat's signs and may repeat the test.

Packages support your veterinarian’s decisions; they do not replace an examination. A registered veterinarian should read the results together with your animal’s signs and history.

FIP and Feline Coronavirus: What an RT-PCR Result Means

A positive feline coronavirus RT-PCR does not mean a cat has FIP, because many healthy cats carry the virus. Vets read the result with the cat's signs, any body fluid and other tests such as the Rivalta test and SAA.
