Stone Analysis

Stone analysis finds out what mineral a urinary stone from a dog or cat is made of, such as struvite or calcium oxalate. This helps vets plan follow-up care and ways to lower the chance of new stones.

What this test checks

  • The main mineral the stone is made of
  • Whether the stone is one type or a mix
  • Types such as struvite, calcium oxalate, urate and cystine

Benefits of this test

  • Shows what the stone is made of, which a scan cannot tell for sure.
  • Helps your vet plan follow-up care and ways to lower the chance of new stones.
  • Needs only the stone, so there is nothing extra for your pet to go through.
  • Gives a record that is useful if stones come back.
  • Helps your vet decide which urine and blood tests to repeat later.

When your vet may advise it

  • A stone was removed from the bladder or urinary tract.
  • Your pet passed a small stone in the urine.
  • Your pet has had urinary stones before and the type is not known.
  • Straining, blood in the urine or frequent small urination led to a stone being found on a scan.
  • Your vet wants to plan follow-up tests and prevention after stone treatment.

About this test

Urinary stones (also called uroliths) are hard lumps of minerals that form in the bladder or kidneys. They can cause pain, blood in the urine and trouble passing urine. A scan can show that a stone is there, but only analysis of the stone itself shows what it is made of.

This test is done on a stone that the vet has removed or that has passed out in the urine. The lab examines it and reports the main minerals in it. Common types in dogs and cats include struvite, calcium oxalate, urate and cystine. Some stones are mixed and have layers of different minerals.

Each type forms for different reasons, so the result helps your vet plan treatment and follow-up. It does not diagnose an illness on its own, and your vet will explain what it means for your pet.

How to prepare

Keep the stone dry in a clean, closed container or pouch, and keep all the pieces. Do not soak it, scrub it or add any chemical unless your vet tells you to. Collection within Bhopal is free; from other places, the stone can travel by courier, bus parcel or through your vet after you call the lab.

Reading the result

The report names the minerals found in the stone. A registered veterinarian uses this together with your pet's signs, history, scans and urine and blood tests to plan care.

Questions about Stone Analysis

Why does my vet need to know what the stone is made of?
Different stones form for different reasons and need different follow-up. Knowing the type helps your vet plan treatment, choose which tests to repeat and look for ways to lower the chance of new stones.
Can the stone type be known from an X-ray or a urine test?
Not for sure. An X-ray or ultrasound shows that a stone is there and where it is, and urine tests or crystals give clues. Only analysis of the stone itself shows what it is made of.
How should I store and send the stone?
Keep it dry in a clean, closed container or pouch, and keep all the pieces. Do not soak it or clean it with chemicals unless your vet says so. If you know where in the urinary tract the stone came from, tell the lab.
How long does stone analysis take?
The reporting time is confirmed when you book. Call or WhatsApp the lab with your pet's details, and the lab will tell you when to expect the report.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
