Cattle Viral RT-PCR Panel

RT-PCR tests for FMD, lumpy skin disease, BVD, bluetongue and IBR in one booking.

5 tests in one package · Sample: Swabs, blister fluid, skin nodule or blood, as the lab advises

The Cattle Viral RT-PCR Panel groups RT-PCR tests for five viruses that cause fever, mouth or skin lesions, abortion or breathing problems in cows and buffaloes: FMD, lumpy skin disease, BVD, bluetongue and IBR. RT-PCR (real-time PCR) looks for the virus's genetic material and can name the cause when signs look alike. FMD and lumpy skin disease are notifiable, so owners should tell their veterinarian or the animal husbandry department. A registered veterinarian reads the results together with the animal's signs and history.

Tests inside this package

  • FMD virus RT-PCR

FMD Virus RT-PCR is a test that looks for the genetic material (RNA) of foot-and-mouth disease virus in samples from blisters or the mouth of cows and buffaloes. A vet takes the sample, and owners should tell their vet or the animal husbandry department about suspected cases.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Vesicular fluid, epithelium, probang or swab

  • Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) RT-PCR

Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV) RT-PCR is a test that looks for the DNA of lumpy skin disease virus in skin lumps, scabs, swabs or blood of cows and buffaloes. It is commonly used to help confirm lumpy skin disease.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Skin nodule, scab, swab or EDTA blood

  • BVD virus RT-PCR

BVD Virus RT-PCR is a test that looks for the genetic material (RNA) of bovine viral diarrhoea virus in serum, blood or an ear notch from cows and buffaloes. It can find animals with a current infection and persistently infected (PI) animals that spread the virus.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Serum, EDTA blood or ear notch

  • Bluetongue virus RT-PCR

Bluetongue RT-PCR looks for the genetic material (RNA) of bluetongue virus in a blood sample from cows and buffaloes. It can help your vet confirm infection, including in animals that look healthy.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Whole blood (EDTA)

  • IBR (BoHV-1) RT-PCR

IBR RT-PCR looks for the DNA of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), the cause of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, in a nasal swab, semen or tissue. It can help your vet confirm IBR in cows, buffaloes and breeding bulls.

RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Nasal swab, semen or tissue

Questions about this package

Who should take the samples?
A veterinarian should take samples from animals with FMD or lumpy skin signs, and call the lab first. The lab tells you how to pack and send them.
Must these diseases be reported?
FMD and lumpy skin disease are notifiable, so owners should tell their veterinarian or the animal husbandry department. The lab cannot promise outbreak control.
Can one panel replace separate tests?
The lab confirms which tests are in the panel when you book. Your vet may choose only some of them, depending on the signs.

Packages support your veterinarian’s decisions; they do not replace an examination. A registered veterinarian should read the results together with your animal’s signs and history.
