Brucellosis Test (RBPT / ELISA)

The brucellosis test looks for antibodies to Brucella bacteria in a cow's or buffalo's serum, using RBPT screening or ELISA. Brucellosis can pass to people, so positive results are managed with your vet.

What this test checks

  • Antibodies to Brucella bacteria in the animal's serum
  • A quick screening result by RBPT (Rose Bengal Plate Test)
  • A laboratory ELISA result to confirm or follow up a screening result
  • Whether the animal has been exposed to the brucellosis germ

Benefits of this test

  • Can help find brucellosis in animals that look healthy.
  • Can help explain repeated abortion or repeat breeding.
  • Helps your vet plan how to protect the other animals in the herd.
  • Helps you and your vet understand the risk to people who handle calving animals and milk.
  • Can be part of the checks before you bring a new animal into the herd.

When your vet may advise it

  • A cow or buffalo has aborted, especially in the later months of pregnancy.
  • The afterbirth is not passed after calving.
  • An animal does not get pregnant after several breedings or artificial insemination (AI).
  • You plan to buy a new animal or bring one into your herd.
  • Your vet advises screening for your dairy, gaushala or farm.

About this test

Brucellosis is an infection caused by Brucella bacteria. In cows and buffaloes it commonly causes abortion in the later months of pregnancy, retained afterbirth, repeat breeding and lower milk yield. Brucellosis is also zoonotic, which means it can pass from animals to people, so it matters for the whole family and for farm workers.

This test looks for brucellosis antibodies in the animal's serum, the clear part of the blood. Antibodies are proteins the body makes when it meets a germ. RBPT (Rose Bengal Plate Test) is a quick screening test. ELISA is a more detailed laboratory test that is often used to confirm a positive or doubtful screening result.

Positive animals are managed under veterinary and government guidance. Your veterinarian will explain the result and the next steps for the animal and the herd.

How to prepare

A veterinarian or trained person should collect the blood, as the infection can pass to people, and the lab uses the serum (the clear part of the blood). Free sample collection is available anywhere in Bhopal. From other districts of Madhya Pradesh, send the serum, kept cool, by courier or bus parcel, or through your local vet or clinic, after calling or WhatsApp +91 88175 01118.

Reading the result

A positive or doubtful result may indicate exposure to brucellosis, and a negative result soon after infection can be missed, so your veterinarian reads it with the animal's history, signs and vaccination record. Positive animals are managed under veterinary and government guidance.

Questions about Brucellosis

What is brucellosis in cows and buffaloes?
Brucellosis is an infection caused by Brucella bacteria. In cows and buffaloes it commonly causes abortion in later pregnancy, retained afterbirth, repeat breeding and lower milk yield. It can also pass to people, so a test result matters for the whole farm.
Can brucellosis pass from cows and buffaloes to people?
Yes. Brucellosis is zoonotic, which means it can pass from animals to people. People can catch it from birth fluids, aborted calves, afterbirth or raw (unboiled) milk of an infected animal. A person with fever after such contact should see a doctor and mention the animal contact.
What is the difference between RBPT and ELISA?
RBPT (Rose Bengal Plate Test) is a quick screening test for brucellosis antibodies in serum, while ELISA is a more detailed laboratory test. ELISA is often used to confirm a positive or doubtful screening result. The lab confirms the method and reporting time when you book.
What happens if my cow or buffalo tests positive?
Your veterinarian will explain the result and the next steps. Positive animals are managed under veterinary and government guidance, because the infection can spread to other animals and to people. Please speak to your vet and the local animal husbandry office before taking any decision.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
