Abortion & Brucellosis Pack
Brucellosis, abortion panel, Brucella RT-PCR, neosporosis and leptospirosis checks for herds with abortions.
5 tests in one package · Sample: Serum + vaginal swab or aborted material, as the lab advises
The Abortion & Brucellosis Pack combines tests for the germs that most often cause abortion in cows and buffaloes: Brucella, Neospora and Leptospira, with the abortion investigation panel. Brucellosis and leptospirosis can pass to people, so wash hands, wear gloves when handling birth fluids or aborted material and speak to a doctor if unwell. A vet should take the samples. A registered veterinarian reads the results together with the animal's signs and history.
Tests inside this package
-
Brucellosis test (RBPT / ELISA)
The brucellosis test looks for antibodies to Brucella bacteria in a cow's or buffalo's serum, using RBPT screening or ELISA. Brucellosis can pass to people, so positive results are managed with your vet.
Cow & Buffalo (Livestock) TestsSample: Serum
-
The abortion investigation panel looks for common infectious causes of abortion in cows and buffaloes, using serum, the aborted fetus, placenta or swabs. The exact tests are confirmed when you book, and many abortions stay unexplained even after testing.
Cow & Buffalo (Livestock) TestsSample: Serum, aborted fetal tissue, placenta or swab
-
Brucella RT-PCR is a test that looks for the DNA of Brucella abortus or Brucella melitensis, the germs that cause brucellosis, in milk, vaginal discharge, aborted material or blood from cows and buffaloes. It can help confirm brucellosis as a cause of abortion.
RT-PCR / Molecular TestsSample: Milk, vaginal swab, tissue or blood
-
The Neospora caninum antibody ELISA checks serum for antibodies to Neospora, a parasite linked to abortion in cows and buffaloes and to nerve or muscle disease in puppies. It shows whether an animal has been infected.
ELISA TestsSample: Serum
-
The Leptospira IgM/IgG ELISA looks for antibodies to Leptospira bacteria in dogs, cows and buffaloes. IgM antibodies suggest a recent infection, while IgG can point to an older infection or past vaccination.
ELISA TestsSample: Serum

Brucellosis in Herds: Testing, Safety and What to Tell the Vet
Brucellosis is a herd disease that causes abortion in cows and buffaloes and can pass to people through birth fluids and raw milk. Blood antibody tests, a milk ring test and RT-PCR help a vet find it, and gloves and washing protect the people handling the animals.

Abortion in Cattle and Buffalo: Which Samples and Tests
Abortion in a cow or buffalo has many possible causes, and in many cases none is found. Samples from the mother and from the aborted calf, taken by a vet, can be tested for infections such as brucellosis, leptospirosis and neosporosis. Handle all of them with gloves.
