What this test checks
- Growth of bacteria that can cause diarrhoea
- Identification of the bacteria, for example Salmonella
- Antibiotic sensitivity of the disease-causing bacteria that grow
Benefits of this test
- Can name the bacteria behind infectious diarrhoea.
- Shows which antibiotics are likely to work and which are not.
- Helps when diarrhoea is severe, bloody, long-lasting or keeps coming back.
- Can show whether an animal is shedding Salmonella, which matters for people at home or on the farm.
- A stool sample is painless for the animal.
When your vet may advise it
- Severe diarrhoea with blood, mucus or fever.
- Diarrhoea that lasts for days or keeps coming back.
- A calf with watery diarrhoea (scours) that is weak or off its feed.
- Several animals in a kennel, cattery or herd with diarrhoea at the same time.
- Diarrhoea that has not improved after the first checks by your vet.
About this test
The gut of every animal is full of bacteria, and most are harmless or helpful. A few types can cause diarrhoea and illness. A stool culture places a small amount of stool on special growth plates in the lab. The germs multiply there, and the lab picks them out and names them.
If a disease-causing bacterium grows, the lab tests it against a set of antibiotics. This step is called sensitivity. The report shows which antibiotics are likely to work and which are not. Culture grows bacteria only. It does not look for worms, single-celled parasites (protozoa) or viruses, which need other tests such as a stool routine.
Growth takes time, so reporting time is confirmed when you book. Because normal gut bacteria also grow, the vet reads the result together with the animal's signs and other findings.
How to prepare
Use a sterile container (ask your vet or the lab) and collect fresh stool without touching the inside; a clean spoon helps with loose stool. Wash your hands well afterwards, tell the lab about any antibiotics already given and keep the sample cool. Collection is free anywhere in Bhopal; from outside Bhopal, the lab will tell you by phone or WhatsApp how to send it by courier, bus parcel or through your vet.
Reading the result
The report lists any disease-causing bacteria that grew and the antibiotics that may work against them, or states that none were found. A registered veterinarian reads it with the animal's signs, because some bacteria also live harmlessly in the gut.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Diarrhoea in Dogs and Cats: Stool Tests Beyond the Basics
After a routine stool test, a vet may add a test for hidden blood, a smear for moving protozoa, a Giardia kit or a stool culture. Each answers a different question about why a dog or cat has diarrhoea.
