Eye Swab Culture & Sensitivity

Eye Swab Culture & Sensitivity

What this test checks

  • Bacteria growing from the surface of the eye or its discharge
  • How those eye bacteria respond to a range of antibiotics in the lab

When your vet may advise it

  • Eye discharge that keeps coming back or does not clear
  • A painful eye with a surface wound (corneal ulcer) that your vet thinks is infected
  • Eye infections spreading through a herd of cows or buffaloes
  • Before changing treatment for a stubborn eye infection

About this test

Red, sore eyes with thick discharge can have many causes, including bacteria, viruses, dry eye, eyelid problems, dust and injury. When infection does not clear or keeps returning, a swab culture can show the bacteria present. The veterinarian gently rolls a sterile swab inside the lower eyelid, ideally before drops, stains or washing. The lab grows the bacteria and checks them against antibiotics. A healthy eye carries a few bacteria, so growth is read with the signs. Viruses and some other germs common in cats do not grow in this culture, so your vet may add tests. A registered veterinarian interprets the result and decides what comes next.

How to prepare

If your vet agrees, bring the animal without cleaning the eye or using eye drops beforehand, and mention any eye medicines used. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Questions about Eye Swab Culture & Sensitivity

Can an eye swab culture find the cause of eye infections in cats?
Sometimes. Many eye infections in cats are caused by viruses or by germs such as Chlamydia that do not grow in a routine bacterial culture. Your vet may combine the culture with other tests and an eye examination to find the cause.
How is an eye swab taken from a dog or a cow?
A vet gently rolls a sterile swab along the inside of the lower eyelid or through the discharge. It takes only a moment and is usually done before eye drops or stains are used, so that they do not affect the result.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
