What this test checks

  • Growth of bacteria from the skin scraping or pus
  • The type of bacteria that grow, for example Staphylococcus
  • Whether more than one type of bacteria is present
  • Which antibiotics the bacteria are sensitive, intermediate or resistant to

Benefits of this test

  • Names the bacteria in a skin infection, abscess or wound.
  • Shows which antibiotics are likely to work and which are not.
  • Helps when a skin infection does not improve or keeps coming back.
  • Can help your vet avoid antibiotics that are unlikely to work.
  • Uses a simple skin scraping or pus swab, so no blood draw is needed.

When your vet may advise it

  • Pus-filled spots, crusts or sores on the skin.
  • A skin infection that does not improve or keeps coming back.
  • An abscess (a pus-filled swelling), for example after a bite or fight.
  • A wound that is slow to heal or has a bad smell.
  • A cow or buffalo with skin sores, abscesses or infected wounds.

About this test

Bacteria can infect the skin and cause pus, sores, crusts and itching. This test finds out which bacteria are involved. A skin scraping or pus swab is taken from the affected area and placed on growth plates in the lab. Any bacteria in it can then multiply and be identified.

When bacteria grow, the lab tests them against a set of antibiotics. This is called sensitivity. The report shows which antibiotics are likely to work and which are not, because some skin bacteria resist the common ones. Vets often ask for it when a skin infection is deep, keeps coming back or does not improve.

This test grows bacteria only. It does not look for fungus, mites or viruses, which need other tests. Reporting time is confirmed when you book.

How to prepare

Do not put creams, powders or medicated washes on the sore just before sampling, and tell the vet about any antibiotics already given. The vet or lab team takes the scraping or pus swab into a sterile container, and collection is free anywhere in Bhopal. From other places, send the swab by courier, bus parcel or through your vet after calling the lab, and follow your vet's advice.

Reading the result

The report lists the bacteria that grew and the antibiotics that may work against them. A registered veterinarian reads it with the skin signs, history and other findings, because bacteria that live harmlessly on skin can also grow.

Questions about Skin Scraping Bacterial Culture & Sensitivity

When do vets ask for a skin culture?
Vets ask for it when a skin infection is deep, has pus, keeps coming back or does not improve as expected. The result shows which bacteria are present and which antibiotics may work against them.
Does this test check for fungus or mites?
No. It grows bacteria only. Fungus, mites and viruses need other tests. For dogs and cats, the lab also runs Fungus Examination Routine and Fungal Culture for ringworm and other fungal infections.
Should I clean the sore before the sample is taken?
No, leave the sore as it is. Do not apply creams, powders or medicated washes just before sampling, and tell the vet what has been used. The vet or collector prepares the skin so that germs on the surface do not confuse the result. Follow your vet's advice.
Can it be done on cows and buffaloes?
Yes. The lab accepts skin scrapings and pus swabs from cows and buffaloes as well as dogs and cats, for example from abscesses, infected wounds and skin sores. Samples from outside Bhopal can be sent to the lab; call or WhatsApp first.

Before you book this test

Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.

  • Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
  • What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
  • The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
  • Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
  • Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
