Canine-Specific T4: What a Dog-Specific Thyroid Test Means

Short answer

A canine-specific T4 test measures the main thyroid hormone in a dog's blood using a method and range made for dogs. It can help a vet judge an underactive thyroid, but it is read with TSH and the dog's health.

A canine-specific T4 test measures the main thyroid hormone in a dog's blood, using a method and reference range meant for dogs. It can help a vet judge whether the thyroid is underactive, but the result is read with TSH, the dog's signs and its general health, because illness and some medicines can also change T4.

What does "canine-specific" mean on a report?

It means the test is meant for dog blood and the result is judged against a range set for dogs. A dog normally carries a different amount of thyroid hormone from a person, so a human range would mislead. Check that your report shows a dog range, not a general one.

The lab's list has two similar names: Canine Specific T4 and Canine T4 (cT4), also written cT4. Which one fits your dog, and how it is done, is something the lab confirms when you book. Show the lab your vet's note if you have one.

Why do vets measure T4?

The thyroid gland sits in the neck and helps set how fast the body uses energy. T4 is the main hormone it releases. In dogs, the problem vets look for most often is an underactive thyroid.

A dog with an underactive thyroid may put on weight without eating more, tire easily, seem to feel the cold, grow a thin, dry coat or get repeated skin infections. Many other illnesses cause the same signs, so they only mean the vet may check the thyroid, not that it is the cause.

How does TSH fit in?

TSH is a signal sent by the pituitary gland, a small gland under the brain, that tells the thyroid to work. When T4 falls, the body usually raises TSH to push the thyroid harder. A low T4 together with a high TSH, measured by Canine TSH (cTSH), may therefore fit an underactive thyroid.

The pair is helpful but not perfect. TSH can look ordinary in some dogs whose thyroid is underactive, so a normal TSH does not rule the problem out. Vets sometimes add other thyroid tests or repeat the pair at a later visit.

What can lower T4 when the thyroid is healthy?

A low T4 does not always mean thyroid disease. Common reasons include:

  • Illness elsewhere in the body: a serious illness can pull T4 down even though the thyroid is healthy. Vets call this non-thyroidal illness.
  • Some medicines: a number of common medicines can lower T4. Tell your vet and the lab about every medicine and supplement your dog has had lately, even if it seems unrelated.
  • Breed: some breeds, such as greyhounds, normally carry lower T4 than most dogs, so a general range may not suit them.

For this reason, a low T4 in a sick dog is often a reason to look further, or to repeat the test after recovery, and not a verdict. A registered veterinarian weighs the number against the signs, the history and the other results.

Do other tests help?

Cholesterol Total often runs higher in a dog with an underactive thyroid. It is only a supporting clue, because other conditions, and even a fatty meal, can raise it as well.

The Dog Thyroid Check Panel groups dog T4, dog TSH, total cholesterol and a CBC for a dog whose vet suspects an underactive thyroid. The exact list is confirmed when you book. It is a convenient bundle, and your vet can add or drop tests to suit your dog.

How should I prepare my dog?

Ask your vet whether your dog should skip a meal before the sample. Please do not decide this alone, especially for a very old or sick dog. Bring a list of current medicines and supplements, and any earlier reports, so the vet can compare. A dog that is unwell, very dull or in pain needs to see a vet promptly, without waiting for thyroid results.

For how thyroid testing changes as a dog grows older, see Thyroid Testing in Dogs: T4 and TSH at Different Ages. Coat and skin changes can come from the thyroid, and also from allergy, so IgE Blood Tests in Itchy Pets: What They Can and Cannot Show explains what an allergy blood test can and cannot show.

Common questions

What does canine-specific T4 mean?
It means the T4 test is meant for dog blood and is judged against a range set for dogs. A person's range would not fit. The lab lists Canine Specific T4 and Canine T4 (cT4), and confirms which one fits your dog when you book.
Can a low T4 mean my dog has thyroid disease?
It may, but not always. Serious illness, some medicines and certain breeds can lower T4 even when the thyroid is healthy. A registered veterinarian reads T4 with TSH, your dog's signs and its history, and may repeat the test.
Why is TSH tested with T4 in dogs?
TSH is the signal that tells the thyroid to work. When T4 is low, TSH often rises, so the two together give a clearer picture. TSH can look ordinary in some dogs with an underactive thyroid, so a normal TSH does not rule the problem out.
Should I tell the vet about my dog's medicines before a thyroid test?
Yes. Some medicines can lower T4 and confuse the result. Tell your vet and the lab about every medicine and supplement your dog has had lately, and ask whether your dog should skip a meal before the sample. Do not stop any medicine on your own.
