Canine Specific T4
Canine Specific T4 is a blood test made for dogs that measures T4, the main hormone of the thyroid gland. A low level in a dog with matching signs may point to an under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism).

What this test checks
- T4 (thyroxine) level in a dog's serum
- Whether thyroid hormone is low, normal or high for a dog
- Support for finding an under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Change in T4 over time if the vet repeats the test
Benefits of this test
- Uses a method made for dogs, so the result is read against dog values.
- Helps the vet screen for an under-active thyroid, the common thyroid problem in dogs.
- A normal result helps the vet look for other causes of weight gain, tiredness or coat problems.
- Can be repeated to follow a dog's thyroid hormone level, as the vet advises.
- Needs only a simple blood sample, with no preparation beyond your vet's advice.
When your vet may advise it
- A dog is gaining weight without eating more.
- A dog seems tired and slow, or dislikes cold weather.
- A dog has thinning hair on both sides of the body or on the tail, a dull coat or darker skin.
- A dog gets repeated skin or ear infections.
- A dog's blood tests show high cholesterol and the vet wants to look for a cause.
- A dog on thyroid medicine needs a check-up, as the vet advises.
About this test
The thyroid gland in the neck makes T4, also called thyroxine. This hormone, a chemical messenger, controls how fast the body uses energy, and it affects weight, skin, coat, heart rate and activity. When a dog's thyroid is under-active, a condition called hypothyroidism, the T4 level in the blood often drops.
This test measures T4 in the serum, the clear liquid part of blood, using a method made for dogs. Dogs normally have lower thyroid hormone levels than people, so a test set for dogs reads these lower values and compares them with dog ranges.
Vets use it as a first check in dogs that gain weight, feel tired, or have thinning hair and repeated skin or ear problems. A normal T4 makes an under-active thyroid unlikely. A low T4 needs careful reading, because illness and some medicines can lower it too.
How to prepare
Follow your vet's advice about fasting, tell the vet about all your dog's medicines, and do not stop any of them on your own. Samples are collected free anywhere in Bhopal, and reporting time is confirmed when you book. From outside Bhopal, your vet can send the serum to our lab by courier or bus parcel, and we coordinate by phone or WhatsApp.
Reading the result
The result is compared with the normal range for dogs. A registered veterinarian reads it with your dog's signs, history and other tests, and may repeat it or add a TSH test before deciding what to do.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
