Serum Amyloid A (SAA)
A serum amyloid A (SAA) test measures a protein that rises quickly with inflammation or infection and falls as the animal gets better. In dogs, cows and buffaloes, repeat tests can help a vet follow recovery.

What this test checks
- Serum amyloid A, a fast-changing acute-phase protein
- Whether active inflammation or infection may be present
- The direction of change between repeat samples, rising or falling
When your vet may advise it
- A dog with fever, tiredness or signs of infection
- After surgery, to help your vet watch for problems during healing
- A cow or buffalo that may have an udder, womb or lung infection
- Follow-up samples to see whether inflammation is settling
About this test
Serum amyloid A is an acute-phase protein made mainly by the liver. Its level can climb soon after inflammation starts and drop again once the problem settles, which makes it useful for watching progress rather than naming a disease. In dogs it may be checked during infections, after surgery or with inflammatory illness. In cows and buffaloes it can help show inflammation such as an udder, womb or lung infection. A single result is only a snapshot, so vets often compare two or more results over time. A registered veterinarian reads each result in light of the animal's signs, history and earlier results.
How to prepare
A plain serum sample is used. If your vet plans repeat tests, sending each sample in the same way makes them easier to compare. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
