When your vet may advise it
- Before using a dog for breeding, as part of a breeding soundness check
- When matings with healthy female dogs have not produced puppies
- After an illness, injury or high fever in a stud dog, if your vet advises a check
- When a buyer or breeder asks for a semen report on a stud dog
About this test
A stud dog may look healthy and still have semen that is not good enough for breeding. In a semen analysis, a fresh sample is checked for how many sperm are present (concentration), how well they swim forward (motility) and how many have a normal shape (morphology). The sample is delicate, because sperm are easily harmed by cold, heat, water and delay, so collection and transport are agreed with the lab when you book. Illness, fever or very frequent matings can lower semen quality for a while, so one result may not tell the whole story. A registered veterinarian reads the findings together with the dog's examination and breeding history.
How to prepare
Tell your vet about recent matings, illness and medicines. A vet or trained staff collects the sample, and its transport to the lab is planned in advance. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Questions about Semen Analysis (Dog)
Can a semen test tell if my dog is fertile?
Why might my vet ask for a second semen test?
Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
