Rabies Antibody Titre (ELISA)
A rabies antibody titre test measures the antibodies a vaccinated dog or cat has made against rabies virus. It is not a test for rabies infection, and it does not replace the vaccination record.

About this test
Rabies is a fatal viral disease that can pass from animals to people, and vaccination is how dogs and cats are protected from it. After a vaccine, the body makes antibodies, which are proteins that fight the virus. A rabies antibody titre test measures how many of these antibodies are in a blood sample. The amount found is called the titre.
The test uses serum, the clear liquid that separates from clotted blood, and ELISA is one of the methods used to measure the antibodies. The lab confirms the method when you book. This is not a test to find out whether a pet has rabies. If an animal is sick with signs that could be rabies, or has bitten or scratched anyone, call a veterinarian at once, and anyone who is bitten or scratched must see a doctor right away.
Owners usually ask for a titre test before travelling with a pet, when a country or an airline asks for proof of a vaccine response, or when a vet wants to check that a vaccinated pet has responded. The lab report shows the reference range, and a registered veterinarian reads the result together with the vaccination record and the pet's history. A low result does not always mean the pet is unprotected, and the test cannot replace vaccination on schedule, so ask your vet about vaccination.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed. Blood is taken into a plain tube for serum, and the pet's vaccination record should be shown to the vet. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads the titre together with the vaccination record and the pet's history. The report shows the reference range. A low result does not always mean a pet is unprotected, and a good result does not replace vaccination on schedule. The test does not show whether a pet has rabies.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Confirmed when you book. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.
