Rabies and Pets: What Lab Tests Can and Cannot Do
Short answer
A lab test can show whether a vaccinated dog or cat has made rabies antibodies, but it cannot show whether a pet has rabies. Vaccination protects, and anyone bitten or scratched must see a doctor at once.

A lab test can show whether a vaccinated dog or cat has made antibodies after the rabies vaccine, but it cannot show whether a pet has rabies, and it must never be used to decide whether a bite or scratch is safe. Vaccination by your vet is the protection. Anyone bitten or scratched must see a doctor at once.
Why is rabies taken so seriously?
Rabies is a virus disease of the nervous system. It is fatal once the signs appear, and it can pass from animals to people, mostly through a bite, or through saliva reaching a scratch or broken skin. That is why a single bite from a stray, an unknown or an unwell animal is never treated as a small thing.
Because nothing can turn the disease back once signs begin, the whole effort goes into prevention, and into acting fast after any bite or scratch. That is the lens for everything below: a lab test is a small helper, and the real protection is vaccination and quick medical help for people.
What really protects a pet?
Vaccination protects a pet. Your registered veterinarian can tell you which vaccine your dog or cat needs and when it is due. Keep the vaccination certificate safe, because it is the record that vets, boarding places and travel authorities ask to see.
No blood test can stand in for vaccination. A pet without a record is not made safe by a lab report, and a vaccinated pet should not skip a vet visit because a test looks fine.
What can a lab test do?
The test that matters here is the Rabies Antibody Titre (ELISA). It measures antibodies in a blood sample, to show whether a vaccinated dog or cat has responded to the vaccine. Owners most often ask for it when a destination requires it for travel.
The report is read by a registered veterinarian along with the vaccination record, the pet's age and its health. The lab confirms the method, sample needs and reporting time when you book.
What can a lab test not do?
A titre test cannot:
- show whether a pet is infected
- prove that a pet is safe to handle
- stand in for the vaccination certificate
- tell you what to do after a bite or scratch
A normal blood report does not make an animal that is acting oddly safe to touch. A pet that suddenly becomes unusually aggressive, drools or struggles to swallow needs an urgent call to a vet. Keep people away from it and do not handle it with bare hands.
A low titre in a vaccinated pet does not mean the pet has rabies. It is a question for your vet.
Which common mix-ups cause trouble?
Three ideas come up again and again, and all three are wrong:
- "My pet is vaccinated, so a bite does not matter." It does matter. The person must still see a doctor at once.
- "The titre looked good, so I can stop thinking about it." Ask your vet what the result means and what to do about vaccination. Do not decide it from the report alone.
- "The animal looks healthy, so it is safe." Looks alone cannot tell you whether an animal is safe.
Keeping these three straight protects both the pet and the family.
What should you do after a bite or scratch?
Go to a doctor at once, whoever the biter was and whatever its vaccination status. Tell the doctor exactly what happened. Do not wait for a lab result, for signs in the animal or for anyone's opinion that the wound looks small.
Tell your vet as well, because the vet can advise about the animal involved. The doctor, not the lab, decides what the person needs. Children sometimes hide a bite or scratch for fear of being scolded, so ask gently and go to the doctor first.
