Amylase, Pancreatic Alpha, Serum
An Amylase (Pancreatic Alpha) serum test measures an enzyme made by the pancreas to digest starch. A high level may point to pancreas, gut or kidney problems in dogs, cats, cows and buffaloes.

What this test checks
- Pancreatic alpha-amylase activity in serum
- A digestive enzyme that breaks down starch
- A rise that may follow pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
- Changes that can also come from gut or kidney disease, which your vet takes into account
Benefits of this test
- Gives your vet one more clue when a dog or cat has vomiting or belly pain.
- Needs only 2 mL of serum, which can come from the same blood draw as other tests.
- Helps your vet decide on further tests, such as lipase or an ultrasound scan.
- Can be repeated to see whether the level is rising or falling over time.
When your vet may advise it
- Repeated vomiting in a dog or cat.
- A dog with a tender belly, a hunched back or restlessness, as if in pain.
- Loss of appetite or dullness after a rich, fatty meal or kitchen leftovers.
- Follow-up of a pet that has already had pancreas trouble.
- A cow or buffalo with long-lasting digestive upset, when the vet wants to look wider for the cause.
About this test
Amylase is an enzyme, a protein that speeds up work inside the body. Pancreatic alpha-amylase is made by the pancreas, a gland near the stomach, and helps break down starch in food. When the pancreas is inflamed, a condition called pancreatitis, more amylase can enter the blood.
The lab separates serum from clotted blood and measures the amylase activity with special chemicals and an instrument. Amylase can also change with gut or kidney disease. In cats, a normal level does not rule out pancreatitis. That is why vets treat it as one clue and not a final answer.
Vets may ask for this test in dogs and cats with vomiting, belly pain or loss of appetite, often along with lipase. The meaning of an amylase result differs between species. So your vet decides whether the test suits a particular case, including a cow or buffalo.
How to prepare
Many vets ask dogs and cats to skip food for 8 to 12 hours before sampling, with water allowed. Follow your vet's advice, see the vet first if your pet is vomiting or very weak, and ask what is needed for a cow or buffalo. Our team collects samples free anywhere in Bhopal; outside Bhopal, your vet or clinic can send the serum by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads amylase together with your animal's signs and history, lipase, other blood tests and often an ultrasound scan. A high value cannot confirm pancreatitis on its own, and a normal value does not fully rule it out.

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Pancreatitis in Dogs and Cats: cPL and fPL Tests
Vets commonly use cPL in dogs and fPL in cats to check for pancreatitis, an inflamed pancreas. The tests are read with the signs, an examination and often a scan, because no single blood test settles the question.
