Lipase
A lipase test measures an enzyme that helps digest fat. A high level may point to pancreatitis, a swelling of the pancreas, in dogs and cats, but it is read together with signs and other tests.

What this test checks
- Lipase enzyme activity in serum
- A rise that may follow pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
- Changes that can also come from kidney or gut disease, which your vet takes into account
Benefits of this test
- Gives your vet one more clue when a dog or cat has vomiting or belly pain.
- Needs only 2 mL of serum, often taken with other blood tests.
- Helps your vet decide whether pancreas-specific tests or an ultrasound scan are needed.
- Can be repeated to see whether the level is rising or falling.
When your vet may advise it
- Repeated vomiting in a dog or cat.
- A dog with a hunched back, a tender belly or restlessness, as if in pain.
- Loss of appetite, dullness or diarrhoea after a rich, fatty meal or kitchen leftovers.
- A cat that is quiet, not eating or losing weight, because pancreatitis signs in cats can be vague.
- Follow-up of a pet that has already had pancreatitis.
About this test
Lipase is an enzyme, a protein that speeds up work inside the body, and it helps digest fat. It is made mainly by the pancreas, a gland near the stomach and small intestine. When the pancreas is inflamed, a condition called pancreatitis, more lipase can enter the blood. A lipase test measures this enzyme in serum.
The lab separates the serum from clotted blood and measures lipase activity with special chemicals and an instrument. This is a general lipase test. It is not the same as the Canine Pancreatic Lipase (cPL) or Feline Pancreatic Lipase (fPL) tests, which are more specific to the pancreas.
Vets use lipase when a dog or cat has vomiting, belly pain or loss of appetite. Lipase can also rise in kidney or gut disease, and a normal value does not always rule out pancreatitis. So the result is read with the animal's signs and other tests.
How to prepare
Many vets ask for a sample after 8 to 12 hours without food, with water allowed. Follow your vet's advice, see the vet first if your pet is vomiting or very weak, and do not starve a puppy or kitten. We collect samples free anywhere in Bhopal, and from other places your vet can send serum or blood to us by courier or bus parcel.
Reading the result
A registered veterinarian reads lipase together with your pet's signs and history, ultrasound findings and other blood tests. Lipase can rise with kidney or gut disease and can stay normal in pancreatitis, so your vet may also ask for cPL (dogs) or fPL (cats).

Before you book this test
Why this notice: so you know, before you book, how a test is done, what its limits are and who is responsible.
- Where it is tested. Some tests are done wholly or partly by an independent partner laboratory. The lab tells you before booking if this test is sent out, and the report names the laboratory that did it.
- What a result can and cannot tell you. No test is right every time. A normal result does not rule out every disease, and an abnormal result does not prove one. A registered veterinarian should read the report with the animal’s signs and history before any treatment is started, changed or stopped.
- The sample. A sample that is clotted, too small, wrongly labelled, leaking or too old may be rejected or reported with a note, and the lab may ask for a fresh one.
- Reporting time. Same day to 24 hours. Times are estimates, not guarantees, and the lab confirms the time when you book.
- Emergencies. A booking or a pending report must not delay urgent care. If an animal has collapsed, struggles to breathe, has fits or bleeds heavily, call a veterinarian at once.

Pancreatitis in Dogs and Cats: cPL and fPL Tests
Vets commonly use cPL in dogs and fPL in cats to check for pancreatitis, an inflamed pancreas. The tests are read with the signs, an examination and often a scan, because no single blood test settles the question.
